(NAPS)—We all know someone
who needs to be vaccinated
against the influenza virus this
year.
With over 200 million people in
the U.S. being part of a group that
health officials recommend receive
influenza vaccination, it is likely
that you or a family member need
to be immunized each year.
Influenza results in an average
of 36,000 deaths and approxi-
mately 226,000 hospitalizations in
the U.S. each year. Despite these
numbers, many Americans think
influenza won’t affect their fami-
lies. Influenza is not the common
cold. It’s serious.
Influenza vaccination is a safe

materials is wood. It requires less
energy to manufacture._________
As the demand for green build-
ings grows, experts at the South-
eastern Lumber Manufacturers
Association (SLMA) ask homeown-
ers to consider these “green” facts:
• Unlike steel and concrete,
wood does not conduct heat and
cold, making it the most energy-
efficient building material.
• Wood products require less
energy to manufacture than
cement, steel or other alternatives
—five times less than cement and
24 times less than steel!

Aston says she’s amazed at
how many parents fail to immu-
nize their children. “I recently had
a friend—who also has three kids
with asthma—say to me that the
influenza vaccine was just for
older people,” she said. “Everyone
needs to know how important the
vaccine is for children and get
their kids vaccinated, whether
they have asthma or not.”

School and a graduate of Texas A & M University is new to
Maypearl Secondary School this year. She teaches
Geometry and Honors Geometry as well as coaching
track, cross country, and 7 th grade girls basketball. She
taught math for nine years at Irving Nimitz High School
and served as head track and cross country coach for
three of those years. Before that, she was the assistant
track and volleyball coach, as well.
A recent newlywed, Farda is married to the son of
Athletic Director Michael Farda. She and husband,
Michael, Jr., don’t have any children as yet. Michael Jr. is
planning to coach and teach, also, after graduation from
the University of Texas at Arlington in May.
When asked about her grandest adventure in life,
Coach Farda said it was a family/girls trip to Ireland in the
summer of 2004. She reminisced about her mother rent-
ing a car and learning to drive on the wrong side of the
road. She said her mom didn’t want to take the train or
other public transportation so she wouldn’t miss anything
during the week long trek through the countryside. She
said her mom ended up on the wrong side of the road
occasionally, but all went well. Galway, Ireland was the
highlight of the trip, she said, and it is the picturesque
green rolling hills and the oceanfront that most people
imagine when they think of Ireland .
As for the famous people Coach Farda has met,
she recalled a time when she was in high school when she
met Dallas Cowboy Michael Irwin. Irwin was at the home
of Farda’s friend, whose older brother had become a
quadriplegic after a swimming accident. Coach Farda
receives a lunch from Maypearl General Mercantile and a
free trial subscription to the Tribune as this week’s fea-
tured teacher.
Building A Greener Future
(NAPS)—“Green building” is a
home-building concept that uses
design, construction and mainte-
nance to create more energy-effi-
cient, environmentally friendly
buildings.
The popularity of this concept
is growing. According to a recent
study, green-built homes will
account for between $19 and $38
billion in construction by the end
of 2007.
