he was a rough and tough cowboy - began to cry a very
deep and sincere cry. We knew at that point that Barney

“Go’in For The Big
Ride”
Late one evening our telephone rang. Gordon, a
friend of ours, called to let us know that his best friend,
Barney, had been diagnosed with cancer. Barney lived
about 4 hours away from us and Gordon asked us to go
visit with him. Jack and I went down to see him that
next weekend.
Upon our arrival, Barney didn’t appear to be sick and
they had not started any kind of treatment. As we
entered the living area, it was as though time had gone
backwards. The furniture was antique and had probably
been there for many years. We all sat in different sofa
chairs and just visited for awhile. He knew that we had
come there to tell him about Jesus, but he wasn’t in
much of a mood to hear us!
Jack and Barney talked about rodeo, which was some-
thing they had in common. Barney told of his “wild”
old days which consisted of drugs, women, poker and
money - none of which really surprised Jack and I. It
seemed like he had a very strong cowboy heritage and
he held on to being a “cowboy” with pride. He told
Jack that he was ready to die if that was to happen.
Barney said “I’ll just pull down my cowboy hat, take
a deep seat and go for the big ride”, imitating a saddle
bronc rider with his legs spurring at a horse. I couldn’t
help but think that he had no idea what he was talking
about. There was a big ride lined up all right - but it
wasn’t going the direction he thought because he had
not asked Jesus Christ into his heart.
At this point, Jack and I weren’t getting very far in our
talk with him about Jesus. He told Jack that this “Jesus
stuff” was for sissies. He didn’t know any “real men”
that were saved. That gave Jack an opportunity to tell
him about some of the old time rodeo cowboys that we
knew had accepted the Lord through our years of evan-
gelistic travels and some of the men of the Bible.
We had sent Barney one of my music CD’s- “The
Small Stuff” - the week before we came to see him. He
said he had listened to the music and like the song
“God’s Western Town”. I shared with him the fact that
Jesus was preparing a place for him right now in heav-

By Don McRay (9-15-01)
It was a Tuesday in September, all
the leaves were turning gold.
From New York to New England,
they're beautiful I'm told.
There was a crispness in the air that
day, that meant fall was on the way,
But little did the city know, that this
would be the day.
The figliters and protectors, came
like they always do.
And anytime they're needed, they'll
be there for me and you.
But so many disappeared that day,
while trying to help a friend,
Escape the fire and lightning, but
then thunder struck again.
And changed the world, every
woman, man and little boy and girl.
Would bow down on their knees,
and ask God to hurry please,
And help me find my loved one,
who's fallen from the trees.
A little boy got down and prayed,
God help me find my Dad.
He's not the perfect Father, but he's
the only one I had.
And if I can't have him back with
and ask God to hurry please,
And help me find my loved one,
who's fallen from the trees.
And God said, some will walk away
today, and some I'll take them home.
To be with me in Heaven, so they
won't have to be alone.
Why did you take sb many God and
why did you leave your son?
You may not understand he said, but
I'll take anyone.
That will change the world, every
woman, man and little boy and girl.
Who will bow down on their knees,
and ask God to hurry please,
And help me find my loved one,
who's fallen from the trees.
