into the soil each lime. These plants need frequent
and deep walering and in sandy soils the roots can
reach 10 feel deep if they gel adequate soil moisture.
Check the soil and when dry l inch deep it is lime lo
waler again. This may every 3-5 days depending on
temperatures and soil types.
The recommended varieties for our area include
"Martha Washington". "Jersey Giant". and “UC
157" according to the Texas A & M website.
Planting time is usually January or February' or as
soon as the ground can be worked in early spring.
Look for I - or 2- year old crow ns at a local nursery'.
A 20 foot row or 100 square feet bed planted with 20
crowns should be enough to feed a family of four.
You should be able to harvest approximately 10
pounds of asparagus per season from 20 crowns
once established.
Since Asparagus does not compete well with weeds
during the first 1-2 years, it is important to spread 4-
6 inches of organic mulch over the bed. After the
first 2 years of establishment, the beds will not
require as much tending. Pulling weeds early in the
season and using a mulch of 3 inches at the end of
each harvest season will help keep the bed healthy
along with fertilizer as suggested above. In the fall,
when the fems turn yellow or after first hard frost.

"One of the most delightlul things about a garden
is the anticipation il prov ides." --W. E. Johns
During the cold of January and early February, in
north Texas il is the ANTICIPATION of the garden
that keeps a gardener going. This year it is the antic-
ipation of my first crop of Asparagus that has me
excited. I have had the asparagus roots in the ground
for two years and this y ear should be the lime for my
first harvest. The good news about asparagus is that
once it is established, w ith good care and suitable
conditions it can last 15-25 years. So there should be
some for the next owners of this properly as well.
Before planting asparagus, it is important to select
a good site at the edge of garden or along a fence
since it will be staying put for many years. This
plant does best in full sunlight and it enjoys deep,
well-drained and somewhat light soils such as sandy
soil or light textured soil. This meant some work on
my soil prior to planting since there is plenty of hard
