DON'T BE CONFUSED >
POLL TAX REQUIRED FOR
STATE AND COUNTY VOTE
Confusion over the recent ratification of the 34th amend,
ment to the United States Constitution could cause some per.
sonsto be ineligible to vote in the upcoming primaries
County Tax Collector Dennis McWilliams said the amend- -
ment repeals the poll tax only as a requirement for voting in ■
elections to choose federal officers. “
• Voters must still pay the SI 75 poll tax fee to vote in state
and county elections, or have a valid exemption.
McWilliams said that at some future time, which has nof
yet been determined, provision will be made for registration
of those who want to qualify to vote only in federal elections
for President, vice-president. United kites senator and con-
grassman from the Sixth District: He said he has not as yet
heard from the attorney generals office as to procedure.
A meeting will probably be set up in Austin in the early
part of February to clarify questiora about the registration
-but this would be after the deadline for obtaining a poll .
tax or exemption, which is January 31.. . M. and Mes. J. H. Basham
