Carpenter warns against
the use of fireworks.
Unfortunately, the range
of state laws and illicit
market make fireworks
readily available. If
you are going to use
fireworks, the following
safety guidelines are
recommended:

type of fireworks, check
state or local laws.

related injuries. "We
are particularly concerned
with the increasing percen-
tage of eye injuries,"
says William M. Carpenter,
“ Texas Society to Prevent
Blindness President.
Too many fireworks
related injuries strike
children, often resulting
in a permanent vision
. disability. An American
Academy Ophthalmology
(A AO) study found that
40 percent of the cases
reported caused permanent
eve damage and almost
25 percent of the injured
-mostly children- either
had an eye destroyed
or lost some vision.
There are many miscon-
ceptions about fireworks.
One is that fireworks
related injuries occur
only in non-regulated
states. In fact, enough
fireworks find their
way into regulated areas
to account for 45 percent
of the eye injuries.
Another fallacy is that
augue, your children are safe
marriage if they don’t use fireworks.
Actually, 25 percent
of the eye injuries were
to bystanders.
Finally, don't be fooled
into thinking that there
are "safe' fireworks.

—Fireworks should
only be used outdoors

out of range before lighting
fireworks.
—Keep water nearby
for emergencies and

fireworks. Never handle
or attempt to relight
a firework that does

thoroughly before

—Never ignite fireworks

The month of July
July was originally
the fifth month of the
Roman year, and was
then named Quinitilis.
Its length has been a
number of times. It was
restored to thirty-one
days by Julius Caesar,
who feld a personal pride
in it because it was his
natal month. After
Caesar's death, Mark
Antony changed the
name of the month to
July, in honor of Caesar's
given name. An ancient
authority says that the
choosing of this month
for so high an honor
was especially significant
because in July the sun
was generally most potent,
and so the more effectually
denoted that Julius was
the emperor of the world.
The Fourth of July
is coming up and I hope
that each one that cele-
brates that day will
remember why we cele-
brate. It is fine to
celebrate the Fourth
of July, if we know what
we are celebrating it
for. Just to be Tiring
firecrackers or sending
skyrockets into the air,
is not celebrating, but
rather yielding to instincts
for rowdyism. So when
you celebrate, remember
to celebrate in honor
