Austin, Texas, June 28—Texas
club women today hailed the pass-
age by the Texas legislature of the
$500,000 cancer hospital bill as the
first major step in fighting the
dread disease in Texas.
The bill was rushed through the
house and senate in. less than 25
days after the federation’s execu-
tive board, at its meeting in May
instructed its legislative committee
to seek the establishment of a state
financed cancer hospital.
A bill providing fcr an appropri-
. ation of $1,750,000 was written by
Mis. Volney Taylor, state com-
mander for the Cancer Control So-
ciety, Mrs. Jud Collier of Mumford,
and Rep. Arthur Cato of Weather-
ford, who introduced the measure
in the house and piloted it through
a crowded House calendar in rec-
ord time.
The senate, however, lopped $1,-
250,000 from the amount appropri-
ated by the house, and passed the
measure. The bill is now on the
governor’s desk.
Under the provisions of the bill,
the Texas State Cancer Hospital
net only will treat patients suffer-
ing from cancer but the hospital
staff wil lengage in cancer research!.
The board of regents of the
University of Texas will have su-
