As a contemporary magazine re-
marks, editorially, the ranks of am-
ateur golf have undergone some
startling changes in the last few
months.
George Von Elm has turned
"business man golfer”—and has
done very well, thank you; some-
thing like $12,000 at this writing. I
believe. Johnny Goodman has an-
nounced (tentatively) that amateur
golf was too expensive for him.
though he may conceivably', feel
more tenderly toward the grand old
game with Bobby Jones and Von
Elm out of it. Personally. I think
Johnny has one of the very best
chances of being the next amateur
champion, in the event he has not
pursued his tentative retirement
with some act invalidating him.
Jones has gone into the movies,
of course, and Harrison Johnston,
national amateur champion of 1939.
has turned inventor, though that in
no wise alters his standing as a dis-
tinctly amateur golfer.
Harrison has invented a game
called "Dart Golf", and they tell me
it to catching on like somebody's
business. It is played on a target
of a pleasant substance called in-
sulite, where the hole is the bull s-
eye. painted blak; there is a put-
ting-green about the hole, and
plenty ot bunkers about the green;
and the entire affair to set up on
an easel, and you plug at it with
darts. ’
The hazards call for various pen-
alties. and there to a tiny red dot
in the middle of the black center,
and if you hit that the first shot
it’s a hole in one. Hooray!_____ .
