It seems that State witness vouchers are easily
forged, due to the laxity of the State in checking

have been comparatitely simple.
The quicker other such forgery cases are cleared

that they have occurred, but not all the blame Ues
on the court clerk and district clerk who already have

hes squarely on the State which is so careless in its

And, it might be added, the play-

of the people themselves. If the

WASHINGTON, May 4—The federal deficit may
conteivably run close to a bflUon dollars and isur-
gent members of Congress will lead a hot fight to
plaster bigger taxes on wealth to meet IL But the
dope now is that regular Republicans and Democrat*'
will co-operate whole-heartedly in staving off any
tax increase until after the next election.
. There may be some question whether it is gpod
business to increase taxes at the next session instead
of having the treasury borrow money. The argument
that current expenses should be met from current
xeventes is met with the contention that increased
taxes would retard the nation's economic recovery.*
But there is no question about the politics of the
situation. Mr. Hoover and Mr. Mellon, on the one
hand, will be kept busy enough explaining that huge
deficit without also having to explain a tax intrease.
In fact, the avoidance of a tax boost between now

Governor Roosevelt of,New York has pondered
over the (barges filed against Mayor Jimmy Walker
-of New York City and failed to find in them “suf-
ficient justification" for further action against the
. mayor. Furthermore, he would hesitate to “annul the
iberate decision of the voters” who had placed
Mayor Walker in office. g .— ------
This action on the part of the New York gover-
— nor shows that Tammany still exercises its old-time
- powers. Mayor Walker, a figurehead in office for
the Tammany organisation, has been charged with
•r condoning incompetence and encouraging corruption
by the city affairs committee, which has been seek-
ing the removal of the mayor.
But the figtit on Walker isn't ended. The com-
mittee announced that it hardly hoped to win over
Tammany in a single battle. It will continue the
fight and also will aid the New York legislative com-

Dietetics interested Franklin, and
on this theme his writings were
better than his praetices. In his
“Poor Richard's Almanac" he pub-
lished many pithy observations
“Don't misinform your doctor nor
your lawyer." “God heals, and the
doctor takes the fees." “A full
stomach is the mother of all evils."
But that he did not take his am-
ateur medicine too seriously may be
judged from a letter to his “Hon-
ored father and mother”, in which
he wrote in. part:
“I apprehend I am too busy in
prescribing and meddling in the
doctor’s sphere.
"But as I always employ a phy-
sician myself when any disorder
arises in my family, and ‘submit
implicitly to his orders in every-
thing, so I hope you consider my
advice only as a mark of my good
will, and put no more of it ih prac-
tice than -happens to agree with
what your doctor directs."

FRANKLIN’S ADVICE
We celebrate this year the 225th
anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s
birthday.
On each of these quarter-century
memorials a diversity of groups ex-
tol the memory of this great Amer-
ican. for so broad was his genius
that he left his mark on many fields
of human endeavor.
Medicine is among these Frank-
lin was not a physician. But, then,
neither was Pasteur, and, while
there is no comparison between the
revolutionizing discoveries of Pas-
teur and the homely observations
of Franklin, the latter are ingen-
togs enough to have secured for
Franklin a permanent' place in
medical history.
Frankiin was largely instrumen-
tal in founding the first hospital
in America, and later served as
president of its board of managers.
He founded the College of Phila-

in England.
Ou ths other hand a married taxpayers with two
children and a $4,500 income paid $314 in England,
4511 in France and only 42.25 this year in the United
States. '
Some students of government argue that with only
some 2,500,000 persons showing a taxable income on
their return in this country It would be wise to es-
tabish a broader base fa order to lessen a present
widespread indifference to federal affairs. Congress-
man Ramseyer points out, however, that if we had an
estate tax at the British rates the governmentrwould
pull in $1,200,000,000 a year instead of the 4140,000,000
now collected by both state and federal governments.

I MORE THAN PAYING HIS WAY
There was some grumbling among the politicians
about two years ago when Governor Moody set up

Lynn on the job. Since that time, this one man has
not only saved the State more than he is costing, but
he also has plugged up leaks caused by careless or
crookedness which will continue to save money in -he

Perhaps the most sensational disclosure which has
