Girls who live in small towns
don’t have to go to the big city
to seek their fortunes, says Doro-
thy D. Houghlo. On the contrary,
a small town is a fine starting
point for world travel and high re-
nown, she believes.
Mrs. Houghton, a dynamic
grandmother, has lived some
three score years in the little
town of Red Oak, Iowa, whence
she has crossed the Atlantic 22
times and has garnered these po-
sitions:
President and only woman offi-
cer of the U. S. Electoral College;
recent national cochairman of the
Ci t iz e ns for Eisenhower-Nixon
Committee; former national and
international president of the Gen-
eral Federation of Women’s
Clubs; current delegate to the In-
tergovernmental Commission for
European Migration and member
of three United Nations commit-
tees; former assistant director of
the Foreign Operations Adminis-
tration. In charge of the ■U. S.

If you baked all the bread for your family, you’d bake
with every ounce of your skill and knowledge. Youd test each >
baking step ... whenever improvement could be made,
you’d make it. You’d insist on baking the beat loaf it was possible
to bake. All these things — and more — are done at Mrs. Baird’s.
For Mrs. Baird’s Bread is baked like you would bake it

"If I ever write a book,” says
the beaming, auburn-haired Mrs.
Houghton,” It will be just to en-i
courage girls who think they
haven’t a chance for exciting ca-
reers just because they are stuck
in small towns.”
Mrs. Houghton was Interviewed
in the dismantled headquarters of
the Eisenhower committee in New
York just before catching a plane
back to Red Oak. She is due to
return to Washington Nov. 20 to
receive a decoration from the Ger-
man government for her refugee
work.
Speaking of her presidency of
the Electoral College, she says:
"Lots of people don’t know
much about the Electoral College
and Its function. Actually when
you vote in a presidential election
you’re voting for electors instead
of candidates, and these electors
don’t actually cast their votes un-
til the following Dec. 17. when
they meet in the various state
capitals. Then they all go to Wash-
ington in January for the inaugu-
ration..
