reviewers sometimes hate to use
because it is often a very inade-
quate expression to describe the
musical support given a soloist.
In this case, the printed pro-
gram probably stated it better by
listing Conley in a faculty recital
with Jack Roberts at the piano.
Roberts, a member of the mu-
sic faculty, very often norforms
the task of supporting NTSC ar-

One of the largest crowds — to
our memory — to turn out for a
faculty recital, greeted tenor Eu-
gene Conley in his first public re-
cital in Denton Tuesday night.
The audience, of approximately
1,000, and including many out-of-
town visitors, also was anparent-
ly very pleased with what it heard,
judging from the ovations given
Conley during the evening.
What it did hear was a varied
program of "tenor music" from
a man recognized as one of the
finest American tenors. Conley,
who in his operatic career, has
sung the tenor leads in many of
the world's great operas in lead-
ing opera houses, joined the
School of Music faculty at NTSC
this summer as resident tenor.
Conley has a lovely lyric voice
that is clear and strong from its
highest nitch to the lower sweeter
tones. The program included ma-
ny popular tenor arias and the
Irish songs that are immediately
associated with a tenor voice.
The program opened with two
arias by Handel; "O Sleep. Why
Dost Thou Leave Me?" from "Se-
mele" and "Sound An Alarm"
from "Judas Maccabaeus." Oth-
er works came from Wolf, Trunk,
Strauss, Massenet, four short piec-

Also in the second part of the

have Conley now in its great pool
of community talent. His services
as a private teacher at NTSC adds
much to local educational resour-
ces and his talents as an artist
are an undeniable asset.
Conley, assisted by Margaret
Grubb of the faculty, will direct
the NTSC Opera Workshop I pro-
duction of Donizetti’s "Lucia' di
Lammermoor" at the school, May
11-12. Mary McCormick, who has
successfully directed the Work-
shop for many years, has passed
her directorial duties to Conley
this year. She is continuing as a
voice instructor at the school.
