a consistent 10.0 sprinter and
has broad jumped over 21 feet.
McLain was injured in the
regional meet and did not qual-
ify for the state meet. He has
run the low hurdles in 19.8, the
100-yard dash in 9.9 and has
vaulted over 11 feet.
Green qualified for regional,
but didn’t place high because of
an injured foot. He has run the
100-yard dash in 9.9 and has
done the 220 in 21.9 around the
curve. His best time in the
event this past year was 22.3.
Winkley placed second in the
state meet in the high hurdles
with a time of 14.9. He runs
the 100 yard dash in 10.1.
Thompson placed fourth in
the state meet in the pole vault.
Brown consistently runs the 880
yard dash in 2:00. Creighton
placed second in the shot put
in the New Mexico state meet.
Returning from last year’s
team are miler-two miler Terry
Darling, of Lazbuddie, quarter-
miler-pole vaulter Jim Johnston
of Knox City, quartermiler C.
H. Underwood of Knox City,
South Plains College is fully
accredited by the. Association of
Texas Colleges and Universi-
ties.
Annual Pictures
Should Be Made
Student pictures for The Cap-
rock, college yearbook, are to
be made the week of Septem-
ber 21-26. All students are urg-
ed to report to Photocraft Stu-
dio, 1211 Houston Street, for
the portraits.
Instructor Don Stroud, spon-
sor of the annual, reports that
picture quality should be im-
proved this year. No charge
will be made for the pictures
because the fee is included in
the activity ticket.
Evening school students, or
any student without an acti-
vity ticket, may have pictures
made for one dollar for the
annual.
South Plains College is a mem
ber of the Western Junior Col-
lege athletic conference.
Seven freshmen track stars
and five returners from last
season’s team are expected to
give SPC its strongest track
team in the school’s history.
The new recruits are Melvin
Bell of Anton, Dennis McLain of
Hart, Ronnie Green of Sweet-
water, Don Winkley of Grand
Falls-Royalty, John Thomas of
Plains, Leslie Brown of Slaton,
and Ben Creighton of Klida,
N.M.
In addition, Hunt announced
that Ray Witt, hurdler-sprinter
from Ropesville would be on
scholarship this coming year.
Witt was in school last year af-
ter transferring from West
Texas State.
Bell qualified for the state
meet in the 100-yard dash and
on the sprint relay team. He is

with the Texans and in work-
outs was timed in 9.8 in the 100-
yard dash and 14.7 in the col-
lege high hurdles. Hunt feels
he will be one of the top hurd-
