The Federal court adjourned
this afternoon after a busy session
occapying nearly the whole week
there having developed a good deal
more business at this term than
wss anticipated.
v The entire session of yesterday
was occupied with the case of the
United States versus 33 head of
horses for violation of the customs
laws. This case excited consider-
able interest and was warmly con
gested the owners of the stock
putting up a hard fight. The re-
sult was a verdict reported at
o'clock last evening acquitting
the horses and hence restoring
them to the claimants after having
enjoyed several months' pasturage
at Uncle Sam's expense. These
horses were seized on a banco near
Santa Maria several months ago
it being alleged that they were in
violation of the customs laws and
that there vere several head of
smuggled horses j among them.
The evidence however failed to
i establish the charge.

' Airships for Uncle Sam.
The announcement his been
made that Brigadier-General James
Allen Chief of the Signal Corps
will make use of the funds in the
Signal Corps' annual appropriation
for the purpose of constructing two
small dirigible balloons for experi
mental purposes. It is hoped that
later Congress will appropriate.
$200000 for the construction of
larger airships. The two new diri
gibles will be probably of about
25000 cubic feet capacity fitted i
with 30 or 40 horse-power engines .
and guaranteed to carry two per-!
sons with ballast and to remain
in the air at least three hours.
All designers and builders of
airships will be given a chance to
submit their ideas to the Signal
Corps and the idea which seems
to be best will be chosen. It is
thought that the new dirigibles can
be constructed for about $5000
apiece. As soon as they are com
pleted the members of the Signal
Corps will begin experiments with
out delay. Probably by next spring
our government will have at least
two of these machines. Scientific
