Hereford's Whiteface golf team had a disastrous start on
the District 4AAAA tournament series the past week at
Snyder posting a team total of 347 to wind up 41 strokes
behind first-round leader Snyder
The tourney series moves to Lubbock Friday, where
teams will play on the Meadowbrook Golf Course Hereford
coach Terry Russell hopes his team will be able to make up
some strokes in the second round District golf teams com-
pete four times—in each league city—to determine the
champion.
Coach Russell reported that most of the schools had a
"bad" day, but it wasn't due to the weather The first round
was played last Friday, and Russell was surprised the home
team at Snyder didn’t score below the 300 mark
Snyder tabbed a 306 team score, and Monterey was next
at 317 Coronado grabbed third place with a 320, followed by
Plainview (323). Hereford (346) and Lubbock High (355).
Each team has five golfers, and the low four scores go on the
books
Hereford's individual scoring at Snyder showed three
members with 86 totals — O.H Seamands, Shane Lockhart
and Joe Priddy Sophomore Curtis Stoerner. who usually
leads the team, came in with an 89 Tom Coneway, the fifth
member, shot a 92.
The Hereford JV team also posted a high score, coming
in with a 406 Individual scores: Rex Lee 91, Billy Word 100.
Larry Vigil 105, Dan Vander Zee 110, and Kelly Lea 114.
HE IS ALSO a represent ative of the Ford Motor Co. in its
markeing division. and Sears. Roebuck & Co . speaking on
behalf of these companies to sales groups marketing people
and other various functions
in 1955, the U S State Department delegated Owens as
America's "Ambassador of Sports" and sent him on a two-
month goodwill tour of the Far East The following year he
went to Australia as one of the personal representatives of
President Eisenhower at the 16th Olympiad He was honored
guest of the German people at the 1972 Olympics held in
Munich
OWENS' athletic career began in 1928 at Cleveland.
Ohio. where he set new world records for junior high schools
by jumping 6feet in the high jump and 22— 1134 in the broad
jump During his high school days in Cleveland. Owens won
all of the major track events, including the state cham-
pionship for three consecutive years
At the National Inter-Scholastic School meet in Chicago,
during his senior year, he set a new world record for high
schools by ruming the 100-yard dash in 9.4 seconds—tying
the accepted world record, and he created a world record in
the 220-yard dash by running the distance in 20.7 seconds.

A WEEK eerlier he had set a new world record in the
broad jump with a leap of 24-1134. During his freshman year
at Ohio State University, Owens set a world record in the 60
meters at 6 2 and created a new record of 6.1 in the 60-yard
dash
As a college sophomore, he had the distinction of being
the only track athlete in history to set three world records
and to tie a fourth in a singletrack meet He ran the 100 in 9.4
to tie a mark and set new records in the 220 at 20.2, the 220 low
hurdles at 22.6. and the broad jump at 26-814.
