A career-high 23 points by

Sowers said action at the
free-throw line was a factor
in the loss. Hereford shot six
of seven from the line, where
the Rebels hit on 16 of 24 at-
tempts.
In the girls junior varsity
game, the Whitefaces were
also defeated, 49-25, to lower
their record to 8-4 overall and
5-1 in District 3-5A play.
JV coach Sharma Smith
said 26 turnovers and a
20-percent shooting percen-
each netting three buckets.
With five seconds remaining
in the second quarter,
Theresa Phibbs hit two free-
throws to give Hereford a
24-23 lead at halftime.
The teams exchanged
baskets on and off throughout
the third period. With the
score 38-36 in favor of the
Whitefaces, Allison Kelly hit
her only basket of the game
for the Rebels at the’buzzer,
making it 38-38 going into the
final quarter.
Hereford could not match
the Rebel scoring in the
fourth period and Tascosa
hung on for the victory.
The loss put the local varsi-
ing in the second OT. Torres
led all scorers with 11 points.

guard Rolando Blackman to
spring loose for 32 points.
“They took over the boards
and took over the game,”
said Houston coach Bill
Fitch.
Dallas held a 52-48 halftime
edge, but Blackman hit 14
third-quarter points as the
17-14 Mavericks doubled their
lead to 86-78.

HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas
forward Mark Aguirre had
not expected the Mavericks
to be able to take liberties
with the gargantuan Houston
Rockets' inside game.
But Aguirre and center Pat
Cummings each pulled down
10 rebounds Tuesday night as
the Mavericks beat Houston
119-117 in a National Basket-
ball Association game.
“We don’t out-rebound peo-
ple too much,” Aguirre said.
Cummings is the Mavericks'
tallest player at 6-10, short by
NBA standards. Houston
center Ralph Sampson stands
7-4 and forward Caldwell
Jones is 7 feet tall.
Dallas enjoyed a 50-32 re-
bounding advantage.
The 6-6 Aguirre was able to
“post up” the Rockets for
many of his 37 points.
