The battle against leukemia—the deadly blood disease that is
almost uniformly fatal—may advance another step toward vic-
tery this month when a Denton native tells of treating the
disease with a radioactive substance.
“Colloidal Zirchonyl Phosphate F-43: Its Preparation. Tissue
Distribution and Clinical Application" will be the title of the
paper he'll read before the International Congress of Blood Trans-
ilusion and the International Society of Hematology, meeting in
Rome this week.
The paper was prepared by Dr. Robert Speer, son of Mrs. Pearla
Speer of 933 N. Locust. Dr. Speer, now living in Richardson, was
graduated from NTSC in 1937 with a bachelor's degree in chemis-
try. He took his master's degree at the University of Texas and
was one of the youngest candidates for the doctor's degree in the
university's history. .....
Since receiving his Ph.D. degree, he's worked in various fields
of chemistry—photographic chemicals, pulp and paper; synthetic
rubber and the use of radioactive isotopes in agricultural and medi-
cal* research.
Now head of the chemistry laboratory at Baylor Hospital in
Dallas, he's teaching graduate students and doing research into
blood diseases at the Wadley, Research Institute and Blood Bank.
. It was at the Wadley Institute that be and Joe Young of Dallas,
a graduate student, investigated the treatment of Chronic leukemia
with radioactive zicomyl phosphate Dr. Speer and Young were
assisted by Dr. Joseph N. Hill and Dr. Ellen Leob, also of Dallas.
Dr. Hill. director of the Wadley Institute, will also read a paper
at the Rome meeting. His subject is "Massive Irradiation and
Bone Marrow Transplantation in the Treatment-of Acute Leukemia.
Dr. Hill is a charter member of the International Society of Hema-
tology and was the oganization’s first president.
The two doctors will make a tour of Europe following the con-
vention. Dr. Speer’s itinerary includes Ireland, Holland. Norway,
France, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal as well as Italy. He will
return to Texas Sept. 22.
