Carlos R. Slaughter, M. D:
MEDICAL & SURGICAL CLINIC Sugar Land, Texas October 15, 1949 Mr. I. H. Kempner Galveston, Texas Dear Sir: I am in receipt of Herb's letter of October 12. I will clarify the questions he asked at that time. 1. Our examination showed your kidneys failed to secrete the proper amount of dye which was in- jected subcutaneously. Blood chemistry showed small amount of nitrogen retension. This is due to a chronic nephritis, which is very mild. 2. It is not necessary to increase your intake of fluids other than one glass of water between meals. 3. You should continue the vitar-in and thyroid pills as heretofore prescribed. 4. A rigid diet is not necessary. The one portion of meat per meal is not for weight loss, but to take as much burden as possible off the kidneys. It is not necessary to restrict yourself to two meals, but three meals with low protein intake. I am enclosing a sample menu, which it is not necessary to follow in its entirety, but some idea of foods. 5. Your condition is not serious, but these steps are taken to prevent further kidney damage. You are in good shape for a man that has done your work, and age. The pains in the lower extremities are due to diminish blood supply of the periphal vessels, which in turn could be explained by some hardening of the arteries, with some loss of elasticity. As long as pain is not vere I would suggest no treatment. With kindest personal or , am ruly s
