Burglary. Between six and seven
o'clock last night some iinknown
party entered the room of H. B.
Ichlehard in the new pumping

Improvement Company Mr. ichle-
hard being employed as engineer by
the company and stole a new double
barrel shot gun and a small alarm
clock. At the time of the burglary
Mr. Ichlehard was absent from his
room and upon returning he found
that his room had been burglarized.
An entrance into the room was ef
fected by cutting out a screen win
dow. The case was reported to the
officials who are on the look-out
for the burglar.

San Rafael Outvotes Brownsville.
Returns from the recent election
are still very slow coming-in. Thus
far only five precincts have made
returns to the county clek. The
only returns received today were
from San Rafael the total vote cast
there being 21 all of which were in
favor of the amendments. This is
also the largest vote by seven of any
precinct yet heard from. The total
vote as reported to date is 45 all of
which were in favor of the amend-
ments. Dr. Sizelan's office will be closed
from Aug. 5 to Aug. 16 inclusive

The Situation Improving The city
water and light plant is said to be
gradually getting into such shape as
to justify the city government in mak-
ing such additions to the plant as
will provide the vity with water that
is. not liquid mud and also turn on
the street lights once more. The
present superintendent has bad a
hard job ot it but he is doing his best
; under the circumstances and now
Isees land ahead of him. He reports
i the past month ns showing a decided
improvement n the business of the
plant and thinks the indications are
favorable for the improvements which
are absolutely .necessary to make the
plant what it should be.

In "Our Swimmin' Hole." Bath-
ing is the popular amusement for the
late afternoon now. Daily at 5 p. m.
the crowd gathers at the lagoon in
Fort Brown. By carriage automo-
bile horseback and afoot come bath-
ers and onlookers making a scene
that reminds one of the fashionable
bathing hour at one of the resorts. A
platform on which is a spring board
has recently been erected at the edge
of the lake and some pretty exhib-
itions of diving are given by agile
young amphibians. Sergeant Fugitt
in charge of the Post has given the
bathers permission to use one of the
houses in Officers' Row .for dressing
rooms a courtesy whicli is greatly
appreciated by all those who are im-
proving the opportunity offered by a
good swim in "our swimmin' hole.
CCOMMITTEE WILL GO TO WORK
Assessments for Support of L. R. G.
V. C. Club Agreed Upon.
The standing finance committee of
the L. R. G. V. Commercial Club met
yesterday afternoon with the special
finance committee appointed at the
meeting last Saturday night to help
in carrying out the assessment plan
adopted at that meeting. The assess-
ment rolls were reported to be ready
and plans were discussed and decided
upon for collecting the money. Ac-
tive work upon these plans will begin
within a few days.

coast today for a short rest from
professional cares.
L. V. Kibbe of" New ork at
brother of City Attorney F. W Kib-
be has been "spending several days
here as the latter's guest. He made
the trip to San Juan by auto with
his brother the other day and was
amazed at the evidence of progress
and development all along the en
tire valley from Brownsville to that
point.
Mrs. Louis Kowalskki with . her
son Joseph M. Kowalski' and the
latter's little son -returned Wednes-
day from Concepcion del Oro Mex-
ico. This morning Mr. Kowalski
accompanied by Master Joe' jr. and
his sister and brother MissEtta and
Francis Kowalski went to the Point
to stay a few drys.
Mrs. F. C. Pierce came up last
evening from the Point where she
and the children have been enjoying
seaside life for a short time. She
returned to the coast this morning
accompanied by her sister Mrs. J. T.
Kinder and the latter's little son
who will also spend a short time at
the Point.
Duval West of San Antonio with
his son Master Duval junior left
for home today after a pleasant vis-
it of several days to his friends Mr.
and Mrs. Aug. Ceiaya of this city.
A two days' visit to Tarpon Beach
with Mr. Ceiaya contributed to Mr.
West's pleasure while here both
gentlemen having won the distinc-
tion of landing several tarpon on the
expedition. Mrs. Ceiaya and chil-
dren who joined them at Tarpon
Beach returned to town with them
Wednesday afternoon.
Lawyer A. B. Cole visited Harlin
gen lately on legal business.
General Traffic Manager Doherty
Supt. FInnegan and Asst. Supt. Lorl-
mer of the Brownsville road who
laid over here yesterday retuned to
Kingsville on the Paisano this morn-
ing. Eltweed Pomeroy went out on the
branch train this morning after a
short visit to his family here.
He is planning to return next week
to take his family to Saltillo for a
vacation.

John J. Conway came in from Mis-

Beach. He went down this morning
to enjoy a little vacation by the
sad sea waves one attraction which
he admits cannot be found at Mis-
sion. J. P. Heacock and his son C. J.
Heacock both of New York who
have been looking over the valley
for the past week took the train for
the Point this morning.
Martin Wright who is putting up
the light and power plant in Mata-
moros left for his home in Sah An-
tonio yesterday. He expects to re
turn soon.
H. E. Agar of San Benito was in
town yesterday on business.
Dr. Z. E. Patrick of Chicago
who recently purchased the McNair
farm on the Santa Maria canal re-
turned to town last night. His tract
which contains 240 acres iand is
practically all cleared will probably
be planted to sugar-cane this fall.
Dr. Patrick is a brother-in-law of
Dr. S. K. Hallam through whom the
sale was made.
