To The Herald.
San Benito Texas Dec- 23.
Among the large enterprises that are
in process of development "near San
Benito is the sugar plantation of
the San Benito Sugar Company. This
j company has a tract of about 2000
acres which it is expected eventuall'v
will all be planted with cane. Sam
Robertson who is one of the best
known institutions in tne entire Low-
er Rio Grande Valley. is in charge
of the development of the tract. He
reports fair progress so far towards
making one of tue biggest sugar plani
tations in the Valley. Mr. Robert-
son states that the company will
plant 2o0 a'rre With r-ane tjhis winter
This much of the tract is already
cleared and 'he work of plowing and
preparing the land for planting will
proceed without delay. A carload
of mules was bought recently by Mr.
Robertson to be used for this work.
He has also purchased 900 tons of
sugar-cane for seed to be delivered
by the first of February at which
date the cane will be planted.
The construction of laterals and
ditches for irrigating the land will
also be pushed. Two more carloads
of mules have been secured for mis
purpose and Mr. Robertson says he
wijl have the wattr ready for irri-
gating the land by the time it is
needed.
A good sugar planter from Louisi-
ana has been employed as foreman of
the place and a! house is already be-
ing erected for his use.
As with other plantations on the
San Benito canal the canal will af-
ford water transportation to convey
tne crops from inis place to the mill
as Mr. Robertson says that lie is mak-
ing the canal navigable from the-new
plantation to San Benito.

This addition to the library in
