A couple of well-known personali-
ties became annuitants recently when'
they retired from active service at
Baytown refinery.
Tom S. Reed and William S. Shel-
by became sixty-five years of age
within three days of one another’s
birthdays. Mr. Reed’s birthday was
January 1, and Mr. Shelby observed
his sixty-fifth anniversary on January
3. The occasion was marked with
fitting ceremonies when a large group
of their associates in the pipe depart-
ment gathered at noon to surprise
these two old-timers with gifts, and
at the same time extend congratula-
tions and good wishes. Mr. Reed was
presented with a large, comfortable
easy chair and a check. Mr. Shelby
received an easy chair and an attrac-
tive reading lamp.
Mr. Reed, a native of Knoxville,
Tennessee, came to Baytown the day
after Christmas in 1919 where he
went to work in the pipe department.
For the past year or more he has been
a member of plant guards. His asso-
ciates in the guard forces presented
him with a check with which to pur-
chase appropriate gifts.
“They were building Battery A &
B and the filler house,” he said, “and
other than these two units, and a few
tanks, there wasn’t much at Baytown
when I came here.”
Mr. Shelby was born in Madison
