RETARDED STREAM FLOW—This photo was made on Seep
Creek following a half-inch rain. The same rain on adjacent Rich-
land Creek watershed which has no flood detention structures
caused some flood damage. Flew being observed here by Bob
Rothe. engineer with the Soil Conservation Service at Brady, is
coming through the drawdown tube on Site 1. Deep Creek. This
bridge is six miles below the flood detention structure. Detention
structures will greatly prolong the stream flow. This photo was
made twelve hours after the storm. At that time this amount of
water was still coming through the drawdown tube on Site 1.
Water continued to flow through the drawdown tube for four
days.—(SCS Photo by D. V. Speakman).

What is water conservation? Wa-
ter conservation is making the
most effective use of water in the
interest of the national economy.
It means using the water that is
needed for a profitable agricul-
ture and at the same time meet-

ter is not stored in a flood deten-
