AVILA, Spain — If Cary Grant
doesn’t burry back to his dressing
room he isn t going to have a fan
left in Spain.
I figure I am costing him fans
at the rate of a hundred a minute.
The explanation is that I am in
his portable dressing room writing
this, be having graciously lent it
to me while he went to do a scene
with Sophia Loren and Frank Sina-
tra.
Half the population of Avila, and
hundreds of country folk from
miles around, are here to see the
shooting of the climatic scenes in
Stanley Kramer's production of
“The Pride and the Passion.”
On their way to where the shoot-
ing is going on, the people have to
pass the dressing rooms, and most
of them notice Cary’s name plate
over the door of the trailer. And,
just as you and I, they can't resist
poking their heads in for a good
look.
What they see is me. While I
would give a good deal to look
like Cary, honesty forces me to ad-
mit that I don't. We are both hu-
man beings, but there the re-
semblance ends. Even so, I don't
think it quite necessary for the
Spanish movie-goers to recoil quite
as violently as they have been do-
ing.
One young girl fell back in a
faint when she stuck her head in
and got a good look at me, and had
to be doused with a spurt of water
from a big earthern jug. Others
gaze incredulously for a second
or two and then break out into
robut Castillian guffaws.
The more considerate of the fans
just shake their heads and say,
“El no est” Cary Grant. No. No.”
Or they say the Spanish equivalent
of “Ay! Yi! Yi!” and flee..
I am glad I am in the safety of
Grant’s dressing room, because it
isn’t too safe outside. Kramer is
preparing to shoot a tremendous
scene — the breaching of the walls
of Avila by Sinatra’s guerilla army,
army. There are more than 7,000
wild-eyed extras charging about,
and Spanish extras put their heart
and soul into their work. They
charge with all the abondon of a
Texas woman at Neiman-Marcus.
Avila’s walls, by the way, were
built in the 11th century, and are
considered the most perfect in
Christendom. Their very perfection
has been a worry to Kramer. He is

of freedom ... by doing your cooking elec-

"And yesterday,” Cary said, I

Springs dropped by to see me. He

QUESTIONS FROM
VETS ANSWERED
BY VA OFFICIALS
Q—I am a World War II veteran
and I have permanent GI insurance
policy. I am planning to get a
loan on my policy. Am I supposed
to repay it in amounts that are
multiples of $5.
A—Not necessarily. You may re-
pay it in amounts of any size, so
long as they are not less than $5
per payment.
Q—I live in a State that pays a
bonus to Korea veterans. Do I ap-
ply for this bonus at the VA?
A—No. VA does not administer
State bonuses. They are enacted
and administered without any aid
whatsoever from the Federal Gov-
ernment. Application should be
made with your State.
Q—I entered service for six
months under the 1955 Reserve
Forces Act. How long does the
free indemnity coverage last after
I leave military service? I heard
it last for only 30 days.
A—The free indemnity coverage
continues for 120 days after you
leave service. Previously, it con-
tinued for only 30 days after serv-
ice, but the period was extended to
120 days under a recent law.
Q—I was a real estate salesman
before I was called to active duty:
Now that I have been discharged,
I wonder if I could take a "refresh-
er” course in real estate under the
Korean GI Bill, so that I could
brush up on the subject.
