the Howard Payne College cindermen earned a fourth-place finish in the second
annual HPC Invitational track and field meet held on the J. H. (Cap) Shelton Track
here Saturday afternoon. Ewing, a smooth-striding Scottish freshman, and his team-
mate McKee compiled first and second place showings in the mile and two mile runs,
boosting the Paynemen to 36 points and the meet’s No. 4 spot

claimed the same position in
girls singles.
Saunders whipped David Bal-
lew of Vernon in straight sets,

singles championship. Saunders
also eliminated entries from
Burkburnett and Breckenridge
Piper in the pole vault and
Dennis Treadaway in the mile.
Carpenter, breaking out of a
two-week slump, pushed the
iron ball a career-best 54-8% to
easily win the shot put. Carpen-
ters' heave was over a foot bet-
ter than his previous best ef-
fort of 53-5.
Smith and Treadaway success-
fully defended district titles with
easy victories. Smith who dock-
ed a 49 9 in the morning pre-
liminaries. coasted to a 50.6 in
the finals as Deanda finished
second and Eddie Larner fourth.

therford in the last 220 yards

REGIONAL QUALIFIERS
All first and second place
finishers qualified for the reg-
ional meet in Fort Worth April
25. In addition to the eight first

were notched by Richard Car-
penter in the shot put. Smith in
the 440, sophomore Jimmie
Lions stormed to eight first
places and shattered four rec-
ords in rolling to 155- points to
only 104 for second place Breck-
enridge. Graham. strong in the
field events, finished third with
59 points. followed by Stephen-
ville with 49, Vernon with 40,
Weatherford with 33%, Burk-
burnett with 27, Wichita Falls
Rider with 16 and Mineral Wells
with 12.
THREE RECORDS
McCullough had a hand in
three of seven records estab-
lished during the day. The swift
Lion senior anchored the sprint
relay team to a record-shatter-
ing 42.4 and posted record
sprint times of 9.7 in the 109
and 21.6 in the 220.

services were held Friday for
Jim Umbricht, the big right-
handed Houston Colt relief pitch-
er who died Wednesday after a
13-month bout with cancer.
The body was cremated.
The eulogy was delivered by
Russ Kemmerer, a Methodist
minister who play* baseball for
the Colts' Oklahoma City farm
club.
Both were relief pitchers for
the National League Houston
Colts during part of last season
and they had roomed together.
