What motorman on what Independent 6th Ave.
subway express has been tooting his whistle three times whenever he
rolls into the 59th Street station, where they have that razzle-dazzle
blonde dispatcher? . . . They say along conductors' row that Freddie
Flannelmouth, who has been on the A-train run for two months now,
is the fastest corner in the business. Gets those doors shut in five
seconds flat after opening. Broke two customers' legs the other day,
and surely is in line for promotion. . . . Seen hand-holding on the
BMT local the other ayem: Jack Krause, prominent bank teller, and
Mamie Daffy, the mimeograph operator at a 14th street law office.
Rode past their station twice. . . .
Ruthie Schnitz, the platform sweeper at Queens Plaza, and her
husband, handsome Joe Schlegal, who operates a Madison avenue bus,
are ready to write the familiar unhappy ending. Career troubles. He
thinks she ought to be home in apron, instead of up at all hours with
overalls and broom. . . . What 37th street garment tycoon paid the
fare for his secretary all the way from Far Rockaway to midtown
the other afternoon—without wifey knowing? . That fist fight on
the Seventh avenue IND platform last night was a dilly. Two train-
men bickering over which had the right to knee two customers into
a packed car during rush hours. . . .
Well, it could happen.

THAT BRINGS US around to an interesting point: just how long
do you suppose gossip columns would last, before a law was passed
to abolish them, if they dealt with the man in the street instead of
movie stars, saloon-owners and television idols?
The average citizen who folds his morning tabloid to the gossip
column and then has an amiably juicy ten minutes' reading about
such-and-such an actress being seen in a swank bistro with a man
who wasn't her husband—that average citizen is under the impression
that he loves his name in print. If he wins a sweepstakes, or gets
married, or rescues a cat from a tree, he orders a hundred copies of
the paper carrying his name. But look at it from the other side.
Suppose the columns used items about his job, the way they do about
film actors or ball players? "The grapevine has it that Joe Doakes,
who keeps the books for P. J. Queue and Co., is on his way out and
that his option won't be renewed next month. The management
claims he's been hitting the gay spots too much and his eyes aren't
what they were."
Whooey! Joe Doakes would be at the publisher's doorfront inside
of an hour, threatening libel, slander and a punch in the nose. Yet
the lucky outfielder or matinee idol, who makes all that wonderful
dough and enjoys all that wonderful fame, gets a steady diet of that
Even if it's true, and it generally is, it doesn't make him feel any
better. He just has to grin and bear it.
ALL OF WHICH, I guess, makes us feel a little kindlier than usual
today toward the gilded young men and women of show business who
so often, we have seen crocked to the ears in local gin mills or beat!
ing their wives in public. They live all their lives in Macy's window
and if they explode skywards once in a while, there are few of us
really with the right to criticize.

NEW YORK—Among the Indignities to which
lx the New Yorker is subjected these days Is a
h transit authority, which, so far as I can figure out
• in my feeble way, was created solely to raise the
i subway fare from a dime to 15 cents. This it has
. done. But for some reason the authority means to
• hang around for a while, and word has leaked but
that it has hired a press agent.
This press agent is one I have not met—
although, like the crack of doom, I expect I will,
too, shortly. Meanwhile, I have been meditating
his adventures. Obviously his job is to create good-
■ will for the authority and make us all feel that
H the 15-cent fare is for every New Yorker’s good.
■ But suppose he attacks it differently? Suppose
he gives it the column-plug treatment? I can see
it now:
