During this month and next is al
good time to repeat the treatment
for stomach worms in your calf crop
for this year. •
Phenothiazine is the most efficient
treatment in most cases, says Dr. S.
A. Grist, veterinarian with the Tex-
as A. and M. College Extension Ser-
vice. You may give it to calves eith- ;
er as a drench or in capsules, but

College Station buyers, given free
choice, bought twice as many eggs
marked “fresh and infertile” in pre-
ference to the better quality Grade
A eggs offered at the same price.
Along with grading and consumer
education, the need of the industry is
for more attractive packaging and
adequate refrigeration of poultry
products from producer to consumer,,
he believes.

Texas has a great deal to gain by
adopting a voluntary egg grading
program, since it has large numbers
of productrs and large numbers of
hens, and produces much of its own
feed, in the opinion of F. Z. Bean-
blossom, poultry specialist of the
Texas A. and M. College Extension
Service. ,
He says at a recent meeting of re-
presentatives of the state’s poultry
industry, leaders agreed that grading
of poultry products would be bene-
ficial to producers, handlers, and
consumers alike. The consensus was
that it is highly important to main-
tain trade and brand names along
with grades, Beanblossom reports.
Conferees agreed that the trend in
Texas is toward asking for a volun-
tary egg grading law.
Beanblossom points out that pric-
ing must be based on grades, before
a grading program could be success-
ful. “Unless producers have an in-
centive for taking better care of
eggs, they can’t afford the extra
trouble and expense of grading,” he
says. He also emphasizes the need
for increased consumer education on
egg buying.
In a recent study in which Bean-
blossom cooperated with the Texas
Agricultural Experiment Station,
Texas may have as many as 200,-
220 tractors rumbling over its farms
by 1950 under the impetus of a vig-
orous nation-wide drive toward com-
plete agricultural mechanization.
This number would be the state’s
quota of the 3,000,000 tractors ex-
pected to be in use on all U. S. farms
by 1950. This full total is depen-
dent, however, upon the South me-
chanizing to the same degree now
prevailing in the Middle Alantic
states.
The demand for farm machinery,
particularly tractors, is the heaviest
in history. Tractors are sorely need-
ed to help the farmer to offset lost
manpower and increased acreage and
to continue to meet high food pro-
duction goals.
Texas farms had an estimated
158,066 tractors out July 1. Of these
between 20,307 and 26,981 are past
their normal junking penod and 7,-
000 more are wearing out annually.
The farmer is in the best financial
condition every known. The demand
for, and supply of, farm equipment
are expected to continue a profit-
able relationship for some time. It
is pointed out that the state had a
record gross farm income last year
of $1,189,301,000 from crops and
livestock. Tractors and other farm
machinery now in production or on
drafting boards will enable the far-
mer to stretch his income dollar.
Not only will this equipment be
lighter in weight, but it will have
better resistance to wear and cor-
rosion. It Will be equipped with
better bearings that require fewer
repairs and less frequent lubrication
and it will be easier and less expen-
sive to operate.
the drench is easier to give. The
dose is ten to twelve grams of pow-
der for each 100 pounds of animal’s
live weight. However, don’t give
■more than 60 grams to any animal, /
regardless of its weight.
To weak, anemic calves, give only ,
half a dose, and repeat the treat-
ment in seven to ten days. Don’t
starve the calves before or after the
treatment.
This treatment, repeated, now, will
enable your calves to go through the
winter free of stomach worms. Re-
.member the name of the drench—
Phenothiazine—and if you want more
information on drenching, see your ,
county agricultural agent. He will;
be able to give you a copy of Exen-
sion Circular No. 222, which gives
recommendations on stomach worm
treatment.
