Killing California heat and flood-
ing Texas rains relented Thurs-
day. "
But the battle against forest
fires in the tinder-dry woods and
brushlands of California went on.
Fires which threatened the town
of Yreka and a giant redwood
grove in the Sequoia were har-
nessed. But firefighters made lit-
tle headway elsewhere

Despite the alumping tempera-

finite break in the heat wave is
yet in sight." And county authori-
ties said the death rate and dam-
age toll could continue.
There wss better news in Texas,
where tropical storm Gladys dump-
ed flooding rains of nearly 17 inch-
es on Corpus Christi.
'Worst is Over’
The flood waters still covered
26 to 30 square miles in and around
homes of 80,000 to 00,000 persons.
But the rains subsided and an of-
ficial said "I think the worst is
over.”
In Mexico, however, Gladys' tor-
rents had sent rivers out of their
banks, cutting highways and rail
lines along the Gulf Coast.
Dozens of small communities
were isolated and bridges were
reported washed out on highways
leading from Veracruz and Tam-
pico. In Mexico City, where
floods made 60,000 persons home-
less, the search for bodies contin-
ued. There was no official count
of the dead.
