One danger of spotting is that
the area will "ring” if you're
dubious about the fastness of
dyes used on the fabric, test an
inconspicuous corner by damp-

white rag or blotter against it.
Should the color run. leave the
cleaning to professionals.
An occasional once-over lightly
cleaning of the upholstery helps
to reduce the contrast between
spot-cleaned areas and to re-
move the loose dust that makes
sticky smudges look worse.

X-ray treatments may not, in

A few months ago I was able
to report the first promising ap-
proach to solution of the acne 1
problem.
Following the discovery that
the tissues, but not the blood, ’
of acne patients contained an
excess of sugar, a team of Ca-
nadian physicians decided to
treat what they called "skin dia-
betes" with one of the drugs
used in the treatment of true
diabetes mellitus.
For their experiment, they
chose tolbutamide, a sulfa-like
drug sold under the trade name j
of Orinase. To their delight,
the experiment proved success-
ful. Shortly thereafter confirma-
tion was obtained from Ameri-
can observers.
Since the drug cleared the
eruption without lowering the I
blood sugar, it appeared likely ;
that, as in the case of true dia- l
betes, it produced its happy ef-
fect by stabilizing the glandular
imbalance, perhaps by direct or ;
indirect action on the pituitary !
governor.
It hi, of course, too soon to
be certain of the tolbutamide j
effect, and of its safety when
