North Texas returns three members off that record-
breaking foursome but doesn’t figure to keep pace with
the Jackets this time. Richard Menchaca, who has run his
880 stint in 1:48.8 on the relay, still isn’t in top shape after
suffering a pulled muscle earlier in the year.
On the other hand Howard Payne is off and winging
on what is hoped to be an unbeaten year. The Jacket re-
layers clocked a fine 7:34.9 at the Texas Relays Saturday
and a similar time should be good enough to win in Denton.

FROM A POINT of participants the Texas Interscho-
lastic League is rounding out its greatest year in athletics.
After the trak and field meet and the baseball tourna-
ment are run off in the next six weeks some 123,000 boys '.
• ‘ and 28,000 girls will have competed in the sports offered,
by the league.
Texas has more teams in football, basketball and track
than any other state in the nation. Only in baseball does
the Lone Star State bow to anybody. Iowa has more base- .
ball teams. That may change soon, however.
There were 914 teams in football with 48,000 boys.
1,089 cage teams with 23,000 boys and 1.089 track teams
with 25.000 running. Baseball has 670 teams with 12,000,
boys playing the game.
Football is by far the best drawing card. Schoolboy
football in Texas has long been the state's top sports at-
traction. Best estimates are that 8.000.000 fans paid their,
way to see 4,300 games last season.
Basketball had 6,000.000 fans watching 25,000 games. ’
