HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1 WHEREAS, Calvin Nelson Clyde, Jr., is celebrating his 88th
2 birthday on April 6, 2009, and this occasion provides a welcome
3 opportunity to honor this well-known and highly respected Tyler
4 citizen; and
5 WHEREAS, Born in San Antonio in 1921, Calvin Clyde moved to
6 Tyler the following year with his parents, C. N. and Emma Butler
7 Clyde, and he has called the city home ever since; he graduated from
8 Tyler High School in 1937 and completed college studies at Kemper
9 Military School in Missouri and at Southern Methodist University,
10 where he attained a bachelor's degree in journalism with honors in
11 1941; that same year, he wed Patsy Elizabeth Kittrell, and the
12 couple raised four children, Carole, Nelson, Thomas, and Eloise;
13 through the years, the family has extended to third and fourth
14 generations, and Mr. Clyde takes great pride in his eight
15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and
16 WHEREAS, After the United States entered World War II, Mr.
17 Clyde joined the U.S. Navy; he served with aviation squadrons in the
18 South Pacific as well as in Texas and held the rank of lieutenant at
19 the time of his discharge in 1945; he returned to uniform in the
20 early 1950s and was press officer for the 8th Naval District,
21 ultimately becoming a lieutenant commander; and
22 WHEREAS, Mr. Clyde's long and accomplished career in
23 journalism and publishing began at age 15, when he started training
24 as a reporter; in 1951, he became general manager of the T. B.
