Troubling news from transporta-
tion services blotched an otherwise
brightening business picture this
week.
First the Association of Ameri-
can Railroads reported the na-
tion’s class 1 (major) lines ran
$20 milion into the red in Feb-
ruary.
Their return on investment for
the 12 months ended Feb. 28 was
only 1.78 per cent, the association
said. The class 1 carriers netted
$25 million in February 1960.
A bleak report on the trunk air-
lines came from the Air Trans-
port Association. It put 1960V net
income at about $1 million for a
profit margin of about .06 of one
per cent on $1.94 billions in oper-
ating revenues
abroad dipped to a 30-month low
n February, the Commerce De-
partment reported. This reflected

Hardware Store has a special on shovels. And
you know how crowded the hosiery counter
of your favorite department store will be when
there's a bargain in stockings or socks. Do you
know: how you find out about these money-
saving values? What brings a bargain to your
attention? Well, you probably read about it in
your newspaper or saw a sign in the window.

Steel's gain was its fourth in
a row. Several companies stoked
up long idle melting furnaces.
New car inventories, apparent-
ly headed for below the 900,000
mark, dwindled because of mount-
ing sales. Chrysler Corp. said the
first third of April was its best
10-day sales period since Novem-
ber.
New car assemblies set the
fastest pace of the year to date.
Electric power production
climbed a notch, some major in-
dustries announced sizeable call-
backs of furloughed employes and
copper producers debated at least
part-way restoration of fall and
winter price cuts.

Pearce also has a suggestion for
those who are anticipating Father's
Day in June. ■
“Why not get your parents a
matched set of wedding bands?
The bands can be secured at
Vannoy Jewelry on reasonable
terms and they will make an ex-
cellent gift for both your mother
and father. You can present the set
on Mother's Day and say that
Father’s Day has come a month
early this year," he says.
