materials. Avoid straight lines
when possible in designing the
yard dividers.
Maintenance will be kept to a
minimum if hardy plant materi-
als that are indigenius to the
area are selected. Arranged in in-
formal but arftul groupings, with
the screens as backdrops to set
them off, even common shrubs
and flowers will look uncommon.
As a final touch, add a low,
simply designed garden bench.

to look at.
Summer is the time to enjoy
your garden, not to work on it.
Regular grooming is needed, of
course, but why be a slave to
growing greens? You can just as
easily create a garden that will
mind you instead of your minding
it
First, what about the ground
cover? Lawn is lovely if it grows
without prompting and you have
a power mower to keep it under
control. But if such as not the
case or if you’d rather sun bathe
than mow the lawn, consider using
a green ground creeper, river
rock, or crushed stone arrang-
ed in neatly plotted rectangles.
To give your garden charm and
individuality, take a tip from the
Japanesee and use screening de-
vices to create intimate, restful
nooks. The object is to define,
not to enclose, with the screens
giving form to the garden rath-
er than leaving it a wide-open,
shapeless field.
Keep the screens head-height or
