The second half started with the
students moving away from the
tired faculty. The faculty could
not muster up enough strength
to even threaten the lead built up
by the students. The final score
of the game was 55 to 28, the stu-
dents ahead. High scorer of the
game was Bork with 16 followed
by Gaius with 12 points. Coach
Joe Beck was high point man for
the faculty with 13.
At the end of the game Ed Herr-
mann was named outstanding stu-
dent player and Coach Beck the
outstanding faculty player.

The student-faculty annual bas-
ketball tussle resulted in a 55-28
cream of the faculty. Represent-
ing the students were the intra-
mural champs, the Aces and three
added men. The Aces had Mike
Dant, Ed Herrmann, Steve Braun,
Fred Gaius, Jim Delker and Jack
Bork. The added three men were
Mike Dow, Paul Jewell and Sid-
ney Hebert. Playing for the fac-
ulty was Father Johnston, Broth-
ers Romard and George, Coaches
Norris and Beck, Mr. Koch and
Mr. Pesoli.
The students took command of
the game from the start. Baskets
by Galus and Bork put them out
ahead 7 to 0. The faculty tried
hard throughout the first half by
sending in sub after sub in order
to keep up wtih the younger stu-
dents. The faculty fought to bring
themselves to within one point,
12 to 11, with 5:50 remaining.
Some fine shooting by Herrmann
and all around good playing by
Bork and Galus, enabled the stu-
dents to increase their lead 10
points by half time, 26 to 16.

rias-Braun over Stephens-Brock-

Since the Easter holidays began,
the St. Edward’s university net-
ters have been going “great guns”.
Under the direction of Brother
Emmett Strohmeyer, CSC, coach,
the netters have won five straight
matches, including two coup
d’etats on the Southern Methodist
university Mustangs and Gusta-
vus-Adolphus college of St. Peter,
Minnesota. The other three- col-
leges which have gone down to
defeat before the advancing Hill-
toppers are Southwestern univer-
sity, St. Mary’s university, and
Texas Wesleyan college.
The biggest upset of the season
occurred on Monday, April 6, when
the netters from the Hilltop
smashed high-ranking SMU in
Dallas, by a score of 7-0. The Mus-
tangs failed to live up to their
name, acting more like Shetland
ponies when confronted by a bar-
rage of tennis balls from the SEU
rackets. St. Edward’s dropped only
one set in the debacle.
Julio Rojas put down a deter-
mined first set challenge by Dave
Fearheller, 7-5, in the number one
match, and then went on to win
the second, 6-2.
The other results were:
Singles—Earl Daniell over Steve
Champman, 6-3, 6-3; Leslie Marias
over Al Pitts, 6-4, 6-3; Werner
Braun over John Boyer, 6-3, 6-2;
and Charles Stiglick over Will
Johnson, 6-1, 6-1.
Doubles—Rojas-Daniell defeated
Fearheller-Champman, 6-4, 6-3;
and Marias-Braun downed Pitts-
Boyer, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
April 7, St. Edward’s downed
Southwestern university, 7-0.
Singles—Julio Rojas over John
Walker, 6-0, 6-2; Earl Daniell de-
feated Bill Watts, 6-2, 6-3; Leslie
Marias downed Robert Bost, 6-0,

SEU Thinclads
St. Edward’s track team was
hampered in the Texas relays
because of the two week layoff
during Easter vacation. The thin-
clads did not practice together
during the vacation, since most
of the team went home. SEU en-
tered a team in the mile relay
(small college invitational). The
team was composed of Jack Hof-
stetter, Greg Ball, Bob Robi and
John Lucas. These four men were
able to get a fourth place, being
beaten by the third place team,
Texas Lutheran, by only two sec-
onds. Lucas . almost caught the
TLC man near the finish line. The
winner of the event was the team
from Austin college, who ran the
mile in 3:28.8. St. Edward’s
milers turned in a time of 3:38.6.
