ON THE DRAG (Next to Co-Op)
and ALLANDALE VILLAGE
Another school year has begun for us on the Hilltop. For
some of us it will be a totally new experience, while for the
remainder of the St. Edward’s community it’s old hat. But
for all of us it is a good time to evaluate or re-evaluate our
purposes in attending St. Edward’s.
In conclusion, I would like to say that this year’s student govern-
ment should be the most effective working student organization
seen on the St. Edward’s campus in many years. We have the leaders
from the classes and with the help of the clubs and the rest of the
student body we can really go a long way. This is a year of change
at St. Edward’s, and student government will have an active part
in that change. With your help this year will be an overwhelming
success. I wish everyone the best of luck during this school year
and hope that you will accept and act upon the ideas which I have
presented to you. Then not only will the St. Edward's community
benefit, but you as an individual will benefit.

We, as St. Edward’s students, are well thought of in the
community because of this Christian image. We sincerely hope
that the freshmen will carry this image with them and that
our upperclassmen will continue setting an example that we
can all be proud of.

Our main purpose in choosing a Catholic university is the
Christian atmosphere it provides. Around Austin and through-
out the country, the image projected by Edsmen has won great
respect. The main reason for this is the Christian atmosphere
that we here at St. Edward’s are privileged to be a part of.
We students are greatly concerned with the development of
this atmosphere. Daily or frequent mass and communion play
a large part in the creating of this atmosphere, but our daily
lives in which we act as Christians are the basis for the atmos-
phere. The most important part of this Christian living is,
basically, being charitable to our fellow man.

Naturally, our first concern should be obtaining knowledge.
We all know that this requires study and a lot of it. But this
year let’s try to seek this learning with intensity. We should
make our courses a challenge which will drive us to seek knowl-
edge beyond that presented to us. We must be careful not to
limit our search for knowledge only to the courses we are
taking. We should learn something of subjects related to our
courses as well as trying to thoroughly sift the meaning from
the course itself. In addition, we should keep up with world
and local events so that we can take an intelligent part in our
community.
To the new freshmen we wish to extend a sincere welcome
and congratulations on your choice of St. Edward’s. We are
sure you will find the students and faculty to be some of the
friendliest and most helpful people you will meet. We are
certain you will find your stay at St. Edward’s both rewarding
and pleasing. St. Edward’s is a university offering limitless
opportunities; make the best of these opportunities and your
year will be most successful.

Young SAC Sets
Out to Improve
Although this year’s Student Ac-
tivities council, SAC, has been
functioning for only a short time,
it has nevertheless taken great
steps toward improving student
life at St. Edward’s.
The Student Life committee of
SAC is now in the process of
initiating a student counselor pro-
gram through which selected up-
perclassmen will assist the fresh-
Some of us think that as long as we go to class, do the assigned
work and obey the rules and regulations of the University we are
ideal students. I hate to break into anyone’s own little world, but
you have only begun in your quest for a complete education. Since
we are members of the St. Edward’s family, we are obliged to take
part, either actively or passively, in all functions which are presented
to the family. In the past, it seemed that more students were content
with a passive role, which often led to the failure of a program.
To lay the cards on the table, your student government, or any
government, cannot function effectively without the help and co-
operation of those it serves. Without your ideas presented to your
elected officials, without your backing in promoting programs,
without your active participation in the extracurricular programs
on campus, your university will fail, your student government will
fail, your education will fail.

Many universities have
I am sure that all of us have our special reasons for attending St.
Edward’s, but I believe, that it is safe to say that our main reason
for congregating here is because St. Edward’s is a Catholic uni-
versity. By now, we upperclassmen should be well aware of what a
Catholic education should and does do for us. The freshmen, during
this past week, should have grasped some ideas on the purpose of a
Catholic education. Therefore, it is not the purpose of this address
to give you a rundown on why we chose a Catholic university and
what a Catholic education will do for us, but to present to everyone
a few ideas on the complete education of a student.
Those of us who have struggled through the theology and philos-
ophy courses here at St. Edward’s know that God does not act with-
out a purpose. When He created you He had a certain job for you
to accomplish, a certain little spot in eternity for you to fill, a special
duty or responsibility for you to accept. If you make the best of the
talents and abilities that the Good Lord has endowed you with you
will be a leader. In this sense, leadership implies giving the good
example which we are all obliged to do. In another sense, leadership
implies the full development of our abilities and using them unself-
ishly for yourself and for the benefit of others. Therefore, everyone
here at St. Edward’s should be a leader. A community depends upon
its leaders for the fullest realization of its fruits. I heartily encour-
age you to take an active part in the running of your school. The
programs which are planned and carried out, the dances which are
held, the activities of your clubs, are for your benefit. Since they
are for your benefit, you should take an active part in them, and
then you will be on your way to a fuller realization of your educa-
tion.

I would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome the class
of 1968 to St. Edward’s university. During this past week, you fresh-
men have seen and heard a lot of things which seemingly have been
pushed down your throats and which you have been expected to
digest. If you feel a bit confused at the present time, it is only
natural. It will take awhile for you to comprehend all the ideas
presented to you, and until you get adjusted, there are plenty of
upperclassmen, prefects and faculty members present to answer any
questions you .may have. I encourage you to see either your faculty
or student counselor whenever you have a problem. Also, I would
like to welcome back to the “Hilltop” the rest of the student body.
I hope that you have enjoyed your vacation and are ready to give
this school year your best efforts.

have found it to be a very worth-
while program. Besides aiding the
■freshmen, the program should
also improve student relations—
an improvement that is needed at
St. Edward’s according to last
year’s academic questionnaire.
The Student Life committee
has also expanded the plans for
the annual Club night which in-
troduces the organizations on
campus to incoming freshmen.
Among the programs of the Re-
ligious committee is that of im-
proving the Sunday masses on
campus by increasing the congre-
gation’s participation in the cere-
monies.
An even bigger program calls
for retreats to be held in San An-
tonio for St. Edward’s students.
These retreats will replace the
ineffective days of recollection.
Of interest to all on campus is
the work of the Social committee,
which is working on plans for the
Freshman dance and the Christ-
mas dance to be held, of course,
in December.
These are but a few of the pro-
grams that have been started by
this year’s Student Activities
council—indications that one can
look forward to many changes
and improvements at St. Ed-
ward’s during this school year.
