Tommy Webb is clearly no stranger to the game called football. While
growing up in the Glen Rose area, he learned to play the sport quickly and
became a Glen Rose Tiger varsity player his sophomore year. "I was the big
guy and played the line and kicker," Webb explains. Tommy stems from an
athletic heritage. His maternal grandfather; Sandy Sanford was recruited by
the infamous Paul 'Bear' Bryant to play with the University of Alabama. The
elder Sanford, also a kicker, won two games in the 1938 season by kicking
field goals for the Crimson Tide that took them to the Rose Bowl. He went
on to play for the Washington Redskins but left the NFL after one season to
join the Navy where he served as an officer during World War II. Bettye
Sanford, Tommy’s maternal grandmother was a world-class skater and his
mother, Susan Sanford McCarty is honored in the Stephenville High School
Hall of Fame for her contributions on the basketball court.
After high school, Tommy's athletic journey took him to Texas Tech as a
“walk-on.” Though red- shirted his first year, Webb made his mark and let-
tered all four remaining years with the Red Raiders. "I played the line,
offense and defense. When you’re a walk- on, you just play whatever posi-
tion they want you to play; anything to be on the team. By my junior year,
I was starting right offensive tackle," explains Webb. Tommy majored in
Marketing/Management while attending Tech. “I was going to New York
and make my million like everyone else," Webb joked. However, only a
year after graduation, Tommy quickly realized that teaching was his career
choice. "It was where my heart was and I believed that I would coach at
some point," explains Webb. He returned to the University to receive his
teaching certification.
Webb’s voyage to Grandview has afforded him several classroom and
coaching opportunities beginning in Seymour where he taught math and
was a varsity line coach. Kennedale became his home for four years where
he taught business and coached the defensive line for the boys of fall.
Bridgeport, Texas was his next appearance then Midlothian, Temple and
Lockhart paved the way to his most recent stretch as Offensive Coordinator
for the Cleburne Yellow Jackets since 2006.
