folks if you have a moment I sure would appreciate a prayer or two on my
behalf, that I will not have any more episodes that make me fall back into
poor health. I don’t usually ask for prayers for me but this time I am need-
ing some to stop this roller coaster ride of up and down. The devil seems to
have my name and number and fighting him to leave me alone has become
a struggle. And thanking you in advance that I know you do for the ones that
read this column praying for all the ones listed here. You have no ideal how
much that means to know that someone somewhere is thinking and praying
for you and others.
I read where Mrs. Lula Mae Clark had passed away. This lady was a spe-
cial lady, always thinking of others and sending blessings and prayers to
people she thought needed them. We need more Lula Mae’s in this world.
The conventions have come around like they do every four years. The
money spent on those affairs would more than help the deep debt that
America is in right now. I just wish that all of them could make their state-
ments for what they believe in and work on those issues to help our America
stay on the right track. SEE BRENDA PAGE 7

Howdy folks. sorry I have not had a column in a few weeks, but I had
another episode that landed me back in the hospital for four days. So after
they get through with me I am certainly not in the right mind to write any-
thing. This week not much better but thought if I started writing again, just
maybe the mind will clear and body will follow suit.
So many things have been happening around our world, it is hard to con-
centrate on much of anything. After I have been home a few weeks, and get-
ting settled back into a routine of retired life and doctors visits and padding
their pockets with money I do not have, doctors now charge near $ 200.00
for an office visit when they only come in a say “Hello, how you doing?”
talk a little bit and that is it. The nurses now do everything so most time the
doctor just looks at a computer screen and sees the recorded blood pressure
and what ever kind of test that has been run on you at the moment. And if
they see fit rush you off to the hospital or another specialist to be charged
another high priced call.
We are trying to stay afloat in this economy of debt and high prices of gro-
ceries and gasoline. The only entertainment that we have at this time in our
life, is staying home and watching television, such as it is, thank goodness
for the western channels and old movies channels, and searching on the
computers. We can’t afford to go out and eat like we used to, because gaso-
line is so high and restaurants charge over priced food that does not taste
good in the first place. Can’t even enjoy a glass of tea which costs over
$1.50 up to $2.30, so we drink water and have even been charged for that.
When we do chance go out to eat I see so many people charge what they eat
to credit cards and some of the prices are ridiculous. Mercy, thank goodness
we do not use credit cards. Never fell into that pit. I know this sound like a
pity party column, but facts are facts folks and that is what most retired peo-
ple have to look forward unless they are rich or had a lot of money inherit-
ed from parents or sold some high priced property that was willed to them.
We make enough to get by. but no extras of any kind and when a problem
of something breaking, like my husbands truck twice needing expensive
repairs or some other catastrophe that happens and has to be fixed right
away so we can survive. Or my husband is run off the road, like last week
by a drunken woman who was determined to put him in the ditch, so once
again more expensive repairs, but she does have good insurance and that
will not be our expense. So maybe this is a pity party column, just thinking
out loud to the woes of life at our age.
We did have a wonderful visit from our son Michael and his wife Sheila
and kids Michael Dwayne and Ashley. They breezed in on Sunday and spent
the night and we had a great visit with them. So that has lifted our spirits for
awhile. The kids have grown up so fast and out of school and starting new
careers and thinking about college and some training to get them started in
life. They are fun and laughing family and always picking on one another.
So we enjoyed hearing them laugh and telling stories about each other.
Makes me and the papaw happy.
Well school has started and sports are underway in all towns around here
and in Grandview. I read a comment by one person who said they love walk-
ing out of the door and hearing the school band practicing and football boys
practicing in the early morning hours on the football field in Grandview.
Just makes one happy to hear those sounds of life around the school
grounds. I know the children, especially the first grades or kindergarteners
or mothers having to let the little ones go first day of school has been hard
on them but after the first week things seemed to have settled down. Several
kindergarteners came home and said they were not going back, already had
enough of school, don’t like it. But after a week they found out it was not
so bad, so decided they would go back. I sure miss those days of when my
boys had their first days of school. My oldest loved it but my youngest just

Every once in awhile congress does something that is commendable.
Very recently, such an event occurred. As a result, they are making my
column this week.
This month, the summer Olympics were active and the events took place
in London. The USA won more medals than any other country in the com-
petition.! was not aware but each medal carried a cash prize as well as the
gold, silver, or bronze medals. For each gold medal the contestant won
they also won a cash prize of $25,000. A silver medal was worth a cash
prize of $15,000 and a bronze medal won a cash prize of $10,000. Now'
remember that these participants are all amateurs. The National Olympic
Committee has very strict rules about how much outside money each par-
ticipant can earn.
If you are a winner, the extra prize is substantial. To be a winner in an
international competition requires an extra amount of dedication and hard
work, just for instance, Missy Franklin won four gold medals and a
bronze. Do the math. Her income tax bill will be $38,500. I don't know
whose idea it was to assess income taxes on these athletes, but I think I
could make a pretty good guess.
There are thousands that don't pay income tax. Congress took the bit in
their teeth and decided that the Olympic winners should be exempt from
the tax, and the bill was retroactive to December 2011. The bill was sup-
ported by members on both sides of the aisle. In other words, it was a joint
idea and it was a demonstration of what could be achieved if the congress
would take a hard look at their responsibilities.
I have been listening and watching the Republican convention, hoping
to hear something official about this unusual move by a congress that usu-
ally thinks first about themselves. Maybe this action is a sign of what we
can expect in the months ahead.
