CATTLE BLOAT
One of the causes of chronic
bloat in cattle is believed to
have been found by researchers
at Oregon State College, reports
Dr C. M Patterson, extension
veterinarian According to their
research, he adds, bleat runs in ]
the family
The researchers kept records
on 250 beef calves in the course |
of the study. Chronic bloat
showed up in 7 out 13 offspring ।

the large storage reservoir in a
network of four stomachs in
cattle. Chronic bloating stunts
growth and is a major cause of
death losses in both beef and
dairy cattle.
Patterson also reports that
bloat occurs most often when
animals are on high-quality
feed such as good alfalfa hay
supplemented with barley Test
animals received a pelleted ra-
tion of two parts half-Inch cut
alfalfa hay to one part grain
mix.
Since the tendency to bloat
was increased in the tests
through selective breeding, Pat-
terson believes that it may be

An all-out effort for the erad-
ication of brucellosis is now un-
derway throughout the United
States. Twenty-one sates and
more than one-half the nation's
counties are now modified cer-
tified free. Of the 254 counties
in Texas, only three—Jeff Davis,
Brewster and ’ Presidio — are
modified certified areas, accord-
ing to Dr. C. M. Patterson, ex-
tension veterinarian
Cattle infected with brucello-
sis often suffer a 20 per cent re-
duction in mOk production.

one and one-half years rather
