County are picking up steam
as voters are getting prepared
and qualified to vote in the Im-
portant elections coming up this
year. Next week Friday, Janu-
ary 31, is the last day for pay-
ing poll taxes.

len, weather observer. Of this

Born and reared on a sheep
ranch near Mullin, he was grad-
uated from Texas Tech in 1958
and received a master’s degree
from Kansas State University
in 1960. He was an instructor on
the animal husbandry staff
there two years and was in
charge of sheep research ex-
periments for Kansas State.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
J. L. Hillman of Mullin.

is scheduled to attend a munic-
ipal electric short course next
week at College Station. Texas.
The three day annual event

A check Wednesday morning
in the tax assessor-collector's
office showed that 779 poll tax
receipts had been issued.
This reflects about one-halr
of the poll tax strength of ap-
proximately 1,500 or 1,600 to
the county. Then there are sev-
eral hundred who are exempt
from the poll tax but are
eligible to vote, in addition to
those who get their exemption
certificates
Voters will face several im-
portant elections this year. The
regular primary elections in
May and June and the general
election in November Also the
regular city council election and
the school trustee elections in
April.
Offices open for election this
year in the county include:
County commissioner for pre-
cincts one and three. County
Commissioner for precinct 4,
<un-expired term of two years).
County attorney; sheriff - tax
assessor and collector Also the
office of county surveyor which
has been open since the death
of J C Long. Candidates for
this office must be a qualified
civil engineer.
