Parrish, whose wife served as
Crusade Chairman for the county
last year and this year, reports
that the Wood County Unit has
been transferred from District 14
(headquartered in Dallas) to Dis-
trict 11, headquartered in Long-
view.
1 4
He also reported that if there
is a cancer patient in Wood
County who needs any of the
many services of the American
Cancer Society, he should con-
tact either Mrs. R. L. Lipscomb
in Quitman, or B. A. Parrish in
Mineola.

B. A. Parrish of Mineola, the
President of the Wood County
Unit of the American Cancer So-
ciety, has given a summary of
the current year’s, work of the
Society in the county.
Parrish, noting that the fiscal
year for the Cancer Society ends
on August 31st, said that he be-
lieved a report to the people of
Wood County would be timely.
The Wood County Unit was
reorganized in September, 1968.
Prior to that time, the work of
the American Cancer Society
had been carried on in the county
by a group of dedicated persons
who gave of their time mdqf
their money to help the ociet
carry on the work of research
toward a cure for cancer. —
In 1968, Parrish said, 4 tot al
of *4,245, including Memorials,
was reported and sent to Texas
Division headquarters in Austin
As ot early this week, the Unit
had reported lor 1969 a total of
*4.868 from the Crusade and an
amount over *300 in Memorials.
•’That’s well over $5,000 that you
good people of Wood County have
contributed to this worthy
cause,” the Unit president said.
“We want to thank all who
have been so generous with their
time and money, and look for-
ward to a much better year for
1970,” he continued. “We had
over 150 persons working in the
Crusade this year.
“At our last meeting, we re-
elected all 1968-69 officers, indu-
cting directors for 1969-70. Some
new Directors will be nominated
for the coming year, and I hope
that at our next meeting — to be
called for some time in Septem-
ber — we can really get started
off in a big way.”

I k It’s Up To You (continued from page 1)
I the city another source of revenue, by adoption of a 1 %
I city sales tax.
Should the city sales tax be approved, income from
this new source would more than equal the amount
I needed to retire bonds issued to pay for a new sewer
■ plant — without adding to the property tax burden, and
I without increasing charges for water and sewer service.
Some citizens may oppose the city sales tax on the
grounds that "it would be bad for business." We ask
1 if anyone can shpw that business in Gilmer, for example,
I has "suffered" since that city adopted a city sales tax.
How many think that the city sales tax has "hurt busi-
ness" in Dallas?
Some have said that adoption of a city sales tax in
Mineola would, in effect, make non-residents "help foot
the bill for a new sewer plant." But how many of those
non-residents "help foot the bill" for the city streets and
fire and police protection they enjoy when they "use"
Mineola? And don't Mineolans help "foot the bill" for
• out-of-city residents' county roads and state highways,
' from our state and county taxes, and license plate fees,
and gasoline purchases?
If a city sales tax were such a bug-a-boo, why
would such cities as Longview, Terrell, Gilmer, Pitts-
burg, Athens, Trinidad have adopted it? And why would
I Tyler and Winnsboro be considering it at elections
’ scheduled in the near future?
* We think the answer to the questions in the para-
graph above is that the governing bodies of those cities
’ have shown good sense, just as we believe the Mineola
City Council has displayed keen insight in asking for
the city sales tax for Mineola.
Let's face it: the City needs help, in the form of
"new" money.
We believe that the most practical source of that
’ new money is from a city sales tax.
We urge you to vote on Friday, August 8, FOR
adoption of a 1% city sales tax in Mineola. ____
