Falcone, 3-2, didn’t win his
third game until Aug. 2 last
season and frequently lost his
cool and rushed his deliveries.
“I take my time, t feel I
have myself under control,"
said Falcone. "Tonight I used
my fast ball away and my
curve and made only one bad
pitch to Enos Cabell.”
Cabell slammed a solo
homer in the seventh inning to
deprive Falcone of a shutout
"He got the pitch up after
throwing nothing but low
Sliders and fasthalls all day "
said Cabell. “I think that
really was his only mistake
He’s really much improved."

A couple of fishermen I talked with recently are con-
vinced cormorants (water turkeys) are killing a lot of
: black bass each year on some of our Texas lakes.
They were fishing Rayburn Lake earlier in the year and
saw huge flocks of cormoranfs living there on the lake
“We didn’t think much about it until we began to notice
that a lot of the bass we were catching were cut. I’d say
about a third of them had slash marks on them,” he said.
"I’m sure it was being done by the cormorants, because
those birds feed that way. They have a sharp book right at
the tip of their bill, and thev use it tn slash fish when they’re
feeding," one of them said
He said he even caught one bass that had its stomach slit
open and part of its intestines were protruding through the
cut. "That slash had to be made by a cormorant," he said.
The big flights or cormorants eventually disappeared
from the area they were fishing, and probably migrated
northward. But their comments left me wondering about
the extent of predation on bass by birds such as the cor-
morant. which seems to be growing more numerous each
year.
So I talked with Bob Kemp, director of fisheries for the
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Austin.
He readily admitted cormorants probably do kill some
bass, but he thought the overall effect wasn’t significant.
“I would imagine that cormorants will feed on whatever
is most readily available. And I doubt that bass are more
numerous than shad. perch, bream and some other fish,"
he said. - .
“We also have some predation by other birds, such as the
greater blue heron. They eat a lot of fish, bass included.
And other herons, as well as egrets, also feed on fish," he
said.

IT HILL
"We have a lot of trouble, at’ trhes;‛with some of these
birds at our state hatcheries. They can really do some
damage. Blue herons, for instance, give us a bad time in
brood ponds. They’ll kill the brood bass and eat them,” he
said
What makes it especially tough is that all these birds are
protected. Hatchery personnel can’t do anything but
patrol like ponds and try to keep the herons scared away.
Just how extensive the overall bird predation on bass is in
our big reservoirs isn’t known, Kemp said.
But he said he still feels like the predation would rot be
just on bass . that the birds will take whatever is most
readily available, including, minnows, shad, perch, bream,
and small fry or fingerlings of virtually any kind of fish.
Speaking of fish hatcheries, and their problems, the
hatchery workers had a lot more to worry about this year
than merely bird predation, according to Kemp.
“It was a poor year, I’m afraid, for our hatcheries. Just
when the black bass were starting to spawn real good, we
had a late cold snap, with a hard freeze, and we lost a lot of
our bass production,” he said.
To make things even worse, the striped bass production
was severely hindered by low water in some of our major
rivers. “We were counting on a good flow of water to at-
tract the stripers into areas where we could collect them for
artificial spawning But the rivers were low, so they didn’t
show up,” he said.
One bright spot was at Toledo Bend Lake, where the
stripers did congregate just above the dam when water was
being released, and workers were able to colect and spawn
a good number of them.
“We also got a good hatch from smallmouth bass in our
hatcheries, but other than that, it was a poor spring," he
said.
