District). The votes are propor-
tioned based on each tax entity’s
proportionate share of the
county’s total tax levy — the
amount of property tax dollars a
district collects each year.
Bowie I.S.D, with a tax levy of
$1.5 million, is allocated 1,560 of
the 5,000 votes. Montague Coun-
ty, with a |1.1 million tax levy last
year, has 1,130 votes.
The third largest voting tax en-
tity is Nocona l.S.D. with 725
votes.
In the two previous elections,
the city of Bowie (with 260 votes
this year)-and Bowie I.S.D. have
cast their votes together to elect
two members of the Appraisal
District Board.
The County has cast its votes in
a block for a third.
Nocona Schools, Prairie Valley
and City of Nocona have cast their
votes in a block to elect the fourth
member while the city of Saintjo
plus the Montague, Goldburg,
Forestburg and Saint Jo school
districts have pooled their votes to

three will be faced with either cut-
ting Johnson’s budget back in line
with theirs, or raising their
budgets up to the level of
Johnson’s.
Among the major differences:
Comms. Hopkins, Wall
and Parker each asked for between
$4,000 $10,000 for lumber, tools
and culverts. Johnson sought
$14,000.
— The three sought between
$500-2,000 for machine hire,
Johnson $5,000.
The three budgeted between
$156-6,000 for bridge repairs,
Johnson $9,000.
The three sought between
$14,000 26,000 for repairs and
maintenance. Johnson $86,000.
And the three sought between
$20,000-30.000 for equipment
purchases. Johnson is asking for
$63,000.
There will still be some minor
revisions to some of the budget

Maxfield’s motion.
J udge Douthitt said he would
make provisions for Maxfield to
secure "a local physician" to ex-
amine Lucas later Friday after-
noon in Clay County Jail. The
judge first said he would assign
Dr. T. David Greer of Henrietta,
but when he was informed Dr.
Greer would be unavailable Fri-
day afternoon, he assigned Dr.
Leroy Schaffner also of Henrietta.
Since the manner of Lucas’ at
tempt to plead guilty could not be
accepted by the court, Judge
Douthitt called it a game of
"charades " being played by the
defendant who’s motive for Fri-
day’s hearing apparently was to
only to have his medication chang
ed.
Judge Douthitt said Friday’s
hearing was a waste of time for
court officials, law enforcement of
fleers and other involved in this
litigation.
The judge said Lucas may have
cried "wolf too often, and that
the court will not entertain future
requests by the defendant for
unscheduled hearings.
If circumstances surrounding
the guilty plea had been acceptabl-
ed according to state statutes, local
proceedings against Lucas for the
murder of Mrs. Rich would have
advanced dramatically and would
have eliminated a jury trial.
As it stands, however, previous-
ly scheduled proceedings will con-
tinue with Lucas’ next appearance
set for 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30
in the Henrietta courtroom. It will
be a preliminary hearing "to con
sider motions or other matters
then properly before the court and
which must be disposed of prior to
actual trial."
The actual trial is set to begin at
9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in
the Henrietta courtroom when
jury selection is to begin.
