to the people of thia country a telephone service that
has no equal anywhere in the world.
It has required vast expenditures of money and
immense concentration of effort, but, these have been
justified by results of immeasurable benefit to the
public. The transcontinental telephone line, -3,400

British fleet is now smashing its
way through the Dardanelles,
according to dispatches received
here from both Petrograd and
Sofia. The latter report which
was received by the Star by way
of Copenhagen, states that Con-
stantinople is in wild panic, real-
izing that the city will be at the
mercy of the allies’ ships as soon
as they have succeeded in forcing
the narrow channel that gives
entrance to the Sea of Marmora.
The four principal forts of the
Dardanelles have already been----------
destroyed, If the stories of trav-
elers from Turkey, arriving in
Petrograd, are to be believed.
The Sofia report further states
that the’ big bridge across
Maritza River near Adrianople
has been blown up and entirely
destroyed. In the absence of
further information/ it is pre
sumed that this bridge was de
stroyed by the Turks to prevent
the possible advance of a hostile
army from the Balkans.
