A Spirometry is done to assess the
ability of the patient to move air in and
out of the lungs. Both the total volume
that a person can exhale after taking a
deep breath and the amount which can
be exhaled in 1 second are measured.
The test consists of breathing or
blowing into a small tube. A bellows-
like device at the other end of the tube
permits a graph to be drawn repre-
senting volume and time. There are
standards adjusted for age and size
against which the patient’s results can

“I KNOW”
There is also Martha’s struggle be-
tween what she believes and what she
knows. “I am the resurrection and
the life,” Jesus tells her, "he who be-
lieves in me, though he die, yet shall
he live.” Then he asks her, “Do you
believe this?”
It is difficult to know just what
was the level of her response. The
words are these. “Yes, Lord; I believe
that you are the Christ, the Son of
God, he who is coming into the world”
(1 1:25-27). The words could repre-
sent nothing more than a superficial
recitation of a belief formula, or they
could be a profound confession of
faith in Jesus. She may not know
what will happen with her brother
Lazarus, but she is firm in her faith
in Christ.
There is also the perhaps surpris-
ing grief of Jesus. We might expect
that, with his strong faith in the love
of God and his anticipation that God
will enable Lazarus to be resurrected,
Jesus would hardly weep at the tomb
of Lazarus. But John tells us, “When
Jesus saw her (Mary) weeping, and
the Jews who came with her also weep-
ing, he was deeply moved in spirit and
