in Tampico, and while there he was a
well met youth, anxious to mingle with
those who were of his country and his
disposition; and with Httle thought of
what the morrow would bring forth, he
joined in the gayeties of a coast city,
awaiting the arrival of the steamer upon
which he had taken passage and
which he proclaimed would take him to

from, which point he would get a steam-

Return of xr. Buek.
Deputy Sheriff O. H. Buck returned
from Mexico yesterday morning and the
first complete story of the last days
of J. C. Hills was learned from the man
who made the long chas after the
former Fort Worth bank cjerk. Mr
Buck tells his story'beginnng with the
first connecting'he had with the case,
prior to Christmas day.
Prior tg-fhe coming of Sheriff Benter
of StOHSwai! county to this city the or-
Ticem6f Sheriff John T. Honea was ad-
viea of the investigation int ths death
-f J. D. MeGaugheyr which occurred
on his ranch near Aspermont. In that
investigation Mr. Buck was a party,
. and when Sheriff Senter and his son.

for fyedo and lost no time in getting
to the City of Mexica They arrived
there Christmas day, and went at once
to the embassy. They found that Sec-
retary Rod had communicated with th*
emabassy by wire, but tn the confusion
incident to the death of Cnsul Gen-
•ml Parbon», the telegram had been
pfzeon-holed
The officers finally found Fenton n.
McCreery, secretary of the embassy, at
midnight of Christmas. Mr. McCreery
took the matter up at once with th*
minister of foreign affairs and he se-
cured an order from the governor of
the state for the arrest of Hills as a
fugitive from justice. The order was
signed by 10 a. m. Dei. 26, and the
officers started out then to find the
man. But he was not in the City of
Mexico.
Had Lett for Tamplee.
An Investigation proved to them that
Hills had bought a ticket from a scalp-
er for New Orleans, via the Mexican
Central to Tampico and via the Mexico
& American Steamship Co. to New
Orleans, from the port of Tampico. At
the steamship office they learned that
Hills had left th* City of Mexico Dec.
21 for Tampico and that the last
steamer for the port of Ney Orleans
had left Tampico Dec. 21. Th« next
steamer was scheduled to sail Dec. 29.
Knowing their man would have to wait
until Dec. 29 for another steamer, they
asked the chief of police at the City
of Mexico to notify the authorities ft
hold Hills if bo should be found, and'
the American officers started. Before
they left the city they were commis-
sioned by the proper authorities as
officers of the republic of Mexico to
serve the warrant wherever Hills was
found.
It was noon of Dec. 27 when the
American officers arrived at San Luis
Potosi en route to Tampico. There was
no train out until the next morning
and while walling at Ban Luis Potosi
they wired a better description of Hills
to Tampico. At 1 p. m. that evening
they, received a telegram from Tam-
pico saying Hills had been arrested
and “ne committed suicide.

When Deputy Sheriff Burk and
Sheriff Benter arrived at Tampico they
learned the facts in the case. The
