Senator Benter explained that it had

Senator Peeler called up and had
passed the senate bill changing the

Senator Perkins called up the invi-

After three hours of wrangling, dur-

invitation by a vote of 21 to 6.
The fight commenced when Senator
Brachfield was recognized after Sen-

the adoption of the resolutlon. ,
Senator Brachfield opened his argu-
ment in opposition to the acceptance of
the invitation by saying that there was
no city in the state which he would

After some further remarks by Sen-

that he would like to correct the mis-

body and move its adoption.
Senator Brachfield replied that he
would be glad to correct his mistake,
but that he thought the Senter resolu-

invitation, and that when the house
had been tendered the invitation and
had accpted it, he would have nothing

Senator Hudspeth was recognised,

Senator Adams, a Confederate sol-
dier himself, pleaded for the perpetua-
tion of the glorious memory of the
Southland by the establishment of the
home.
Senator. Willacy followed Senator
Adams, and with his usual eloquence,
pictured the grandeur of the spirit oti
the South in the war between the
states.
Senator Murray sent up a proposi-
tion from a number of senators to give
their services to the passage of the
amendment when submitted since they
hadn't spoken.
Thus all of those who had spoken
requested that their names be added
to the list. Upon motion of Senator
Terrell of Bowl*, by a rising vote, the
name of Ieutenant Governor A. B.
Davidson was also added to ths propo-
sition.
Senator Holsey then spoke for the
resolution and told of his efforts in be- l
half of Mark Stewart, the Confederate I
soldier who was imprisoned in Mexico.
At the conclusion of his talk the Mur.
ray proposition was signed by all the i
members of the senate who were pres-
ent.
Correctory amendments to the reso-
lution were offered by Willacy and
Hayter and adopted, after which the
resolution was unanimously passed to;
engrossment.
Upon motion of Senator Meachum, I
Mrs. Afleck of Washington county, vice i
president of the Daughters of the Con-
federacy, addressed the senate, Senators.
Meachum, Willacy and Kellie escorting
her to the platform.
She thanked the senate for Ita action
in passing the resolution, and was es-
pecially pleased with the unanimous
pledge given to work for its adoption
at the polls, as support on election day
was what it needed most.
Senator Senter then roes to a gue5-
tion of personal privilege and deliver-
ed himself of a few very pointed re-
marks anent certain people who, .he
said, were trying to interfere with the
adoption, of the resolution inviting the
legislature to visit Dallas.’
At 1 :55 o'clock the senate took a re-
cess until 3:30 o'clock.

necessary because of objection to mo-
tion by Terrell and the call for an aye

Members were excused by a vote of
20 to 8. The bill was then passed to
engrossment by the same vote
A motfon for the suspension of the
rules disclosed 21 ayes and 7 nays, and
this not being the necessary four-
fifths vote the senate refused to sus-
pend the rules and the bill will have
to lay over until tomorrow for final
passage. •
Upon motion of Senator Meachum the
senate, bill authorising the creation of
improvement districts to prevent over-
lows by building of levees, etc., was
taken up and finally passed Upon mo-
tion of Senator Willacy, the Confeder-
ate Widows' home amendment resolu-
tion was taken up and a couple of cor-
rectory amendments offered and
adopted.
Senator Kellie thought there should

He then spoke of the mass meeting
held in Dallas, at which it was decided
to invite the legislature to that city to
point out to the legislators the detri-
mental effect which the passage of the
anti-race track bill would have upon
Dallas, thle meeting being called after
the passage of the measure in the
house. He thought this invitation a
moot unusual one, in fact, the first one
of Ite kind which had ever been .ten-
dered to the senate during hie eight
veers' membership in that body. He
thought the senate should adjourn than
and let the committee before which the
anti-race track bill was pending meet
and allow the 160 Dallasites who were
in the city to appear before it and point
out the detrimental effect which tts
passage would have upon Dallas.
Senator Paulus wanted to know if
the differential bills had ndt been
pending when the legislature accepted
the invitations of Houston and Galves-
ton. Senator Mayfield wanted to know
It it was not a faot that these bills
had not passed either house when those
invitations were accepted.
