There is no better time then the holiday season to come
to the assistance of those who are less fortunate than our-
selves.
And there is no better place In the world to find people
more willihg to give to the needy in an effort to help their
holiday season have meaning. than In Carthage and Panola
County.
We have In our communities some of the finest people,
who live by a code which calls for helping others when the
need is there. On numerous occasions letters to the editor,
stories, phono calls and eye-witness reports revolve around
the fact that some person, or organization, in our area
came to the aid of someone in need.
This phenomenon is not unique to the citizens of Panola
County, but it is a rarity in many communities of tho land.
The quality of compassion and willingness to help
provide for the needs of the loss fortunate is hard enough
to find in most communities. When that quality Is there. It
truly classifies as a phenomenon.
During the holiday season, especially, there are a num-
ber of civic, service, charity and other groups who band
together to organize help programs for the needy. Those
programs are designed to spread the Christmas spirit to
those who are unable to provide their own hoiday cheer.
From collecting toys - old and new - to canned goods,
clothing, money and meals, the people involved in our local
groups go beyond their normal capacity to give and search
out those who need help.
There are many. And as, often as the newspaper hears of
these organized efforts to help the needy enjoy this time of
fellowship and goodwill we make every effort to inform the
public.
There are a number of commendable programs under
way presently, and a few, such as the Toys for the Needy,
area church food and canned goods baskets. free holiday
entertainment and more, have been publicized over the last
several weeks. But, for every one group effort that has
been publicized, there are likely two which we have not
been told about.
Anyone with information about area programs which
have not been mentioned or recognized in the Panola Coun-
ty Newspapers is urged to notify us. Let your community
newspaper, as a public service, tell others who might wish
to help those in need about the program.
Through publication in the newspaper we can also reach
more of those who may be unaware that there is a in-
dividual. group or organization nearby which would be
willing to give them a helping hand.
The people of our communities constantly exhibit the
qualities which make this a great place to live. But, it
seems, during the holiday season is when our light shines
the longest, brightest and best.

A big round of applause should be given members of the
Joint Committoe on Solid Waste for their effectiveness and
cooperation in working together toward a feasible answer
to the common problem of future solide waste disposal
With their decision Tuesday to accept the recom-
mendation of a proposal regarding the construction of a
garbage-burning incinerator here, the committee exhibited
the qualities of leadership and organhod planning which
their voting constituents seem to have recogized.
The joint committee's cooperative efforts and strong em-
phasis on achieving a fair and equitable co-owned
operation between the City of Carthage and Panolo County
is yet another unique quality not often found in many com-
munities.
There are two representatives each from the city and
county commission, and one citizen-at-large who serve on
the Joint Committee. They are County Commissioners
Roland Davis and Carl Hendrickson. City Commissioner
Stave Kelley and City Mayor Carson Joines. and citizen
Murray Marie. Also serving as chairman of the committee is
