Jesse Jackson's success in negotiating the release of an
American airman captured last month after bailing out over
Syrian territory has generated an infinite range of opinion
among American citizens.
The attitudes vary from heroism to speculation of
prefabricated results and if is questionable which direction
might deserve the most concentration of thought.
Jackson has been blasted in some editorials for his
unauthorized appeal to Syrian President Hafez Assad for
the release of Navy Lt. Robert O. Goodman Jr. He has been
lauded for his efforts by others.
It would seem laudable that the 1984 candidate for the
Democratic presidential nomination has - one way. or
another - obtained the release of an American serviceman.
, But his method of showboating might also provide some in-
sight into the way the civil rights leader would approach
things were he president.
An editorial in the Jan. 3 issue of The Longview Morning
Journal stated that Jackson, "whether successful or not."
had no right, despite being a presidential candidate, to act
’on a diplomatic matter of such sensitivity.
It was also stated that Assad exhibited equal disrespect
for the U.S. government by meeting with a non-official per-
son acting in an assumed official capacity. Assad's 90-
minute session with Jackson was cited as being a "slap at
the State Department and the Reagan administration."
Assad's disrespect for the U.S. was shewn during events
which led to the air strike over Lebanon in early December
and resulting capture of Lt. Goodman, whom the Syrian
government refused to release afterward, despite U.S.
government appeals.
Jackson has been called a shameless self promoter long
before he announced his self-styled "humanitarian mission"
to' Syria. The former lieutenant to the Rev. Martin Luther
King Jr. has always exhibited a brash attitude and managed
to maximize each beam of public spotlight - good or bod -
he encounters.
Jackson might be in a position to receive commendation
for his apparent successful plea to the Syrian president for
it. Goodman's release but, in doing so, he has generated
doubts in all but the blindest of hero worshipers about his
political maturity.
Jackson's style of doing things will pull a few more votes
his way. But there will be just as many who rally around the
concept that "showboat" politics isn't exactly what the U.S.
needs.
No manor who is sitting behind the desk where the buck
stops in Washington after upcoming elections, that person
must have a better handle on diplomatic relations, and be
able to deal with world problems as a whole, not jump into
individual situations on the spur of an emotional moment.
What kind of promises did Jackson make in return for the
release of Lt. Goodman? Does he expect his success -
probably rightfully so -- to sway the majority's sentiment to
his pursuit of the presidency?
Was Jackson's success a simple lucky punch or are there
hidden factors only a chosen few ore aware of? Will the
rest of us in the U.S. find out the truth after we allow
emotions of the moment to place a man in this country's
highest office without regard to his overall abilities?
It is not a question of what color best serves the leader-
ship role of our nation. It is a matter concerning political
maturity and an ability to serve on more than one level and
