When the Carthage school board meets at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday night to consider a proposed change in vocational
program requirements at Carthage High School. it will bo
making a decision which could have tremendous impact on
the entire lives of many present and future CHS students.
The board is being asked to require vocational students
to take at least five classes per day. Instead of the four
presently required.
The chongas being recommended by Supt. Dr. Marvin
Crowford oro not popular, by the superintendent’s own ad-
mission.
But he says ho Is recommending them because he thinks
they are "the right thing to do.”
Well, wo think Dr. Crawford is right about a lot of things,
and we support him on those.
But this is one time we think Dr. Crawford is wrong, and
wo would urge the school board to reject this proposal.
Most of the employers we know in Carthage also are
against the changes.
And we think the majority of citizens would oppose
them, too, given the opportunity to thoroughly study the
situation.
It has taken society a long time to come to the realization
that not every student should be compelled to pursue an
education leading to a college degree.
Some can't afford it.
Some can't cut it.
And some simply don't want it.
We have seen a lot of progress locally, statewide and
nationwide in recent years toward restructuring education
to give those non-college-bound students an opportunity to
loam the skills they will need to make a living in life.
And wo oppose any stop backward for the vocational
education program which already has proven to be so suc-
cessful locally In turning out students with marketable job
skills - skills which In many cases earn better salaries than
those of college graduates.
We know many vocational program graduates who could
never have made it through college for various reasons, but
are among the most successful citizens in Carthage. and
many others who are not wealthy, but who are earning
plenty to support their families and pay their taxes.
To increase the academic requirements for the juniors
and seniors In the cooperative job training programs may
not eliminate tho wealthiest brightest and most energetic
students from the program.
They probably can find a way to get to school at 7 a.m. to
take the additional course. do the work required to pass
five courses, and also complete the work required at their
work training stations.
But the proposed changes would have the effect of
eliminating many from the program who have no 7 o.m.
transportation, or do not have the physical or mental
energy to spend 10 or 11 hours a day in class and on the
job.
So the net effect of the proposed change would be to
screen out of the program many of those who could benefit
