At the turn of the century. First National Bank was
housed in this building on the corner of South St. Mary
and Sabine on the Carthage square until it moved into
One Hank Place in December of 1980. The bank was
sharing quarters with a local dentist whose office was
located upstairs.

When you get right down to it, a bank is the sum total of the peo-
ple whose banking home is that bank: the primary reason for our
continued growth is the constantly expanding number of people
who choose to make The First National Bank of Carthage their
banking home. We are humbly grateful for having the privilege
of serving each of you. As we observe our 90th anniversary, we
want to express our deep appreciation to you for the confidence
and faith you have placed in us during the past years ... and for
the consistent and constructive growth which you have enabled
us to achieve.
Now and in the years to come, we pledge our utmost efforts to
be worthy of this trust and confidence. "Eager to serve” will con-
tinue to be the guiding principle of the directors, officers, and
staff of the First National Bank of Carthage.

Labor used to be classified as an
intangible commodity and until the
July special session of the Texas
Legislature was not included in the
long list of items on which sales
tax can be charged
Tuesday Oct 2 however new
lows passed by this legislative ac-
tion go into effect, hiking prices of
many items previously not subject
to state and city sales tax. Among
the classes affected will be labor
on repairs to most items.
When the toaster refuses to pop
up and the television maintains a
permanent vertical roll fixing it or
buying a new one will take on a
new area of consideration.
The new sales tax rate for city
and state will tag on ad-
ditional 5 and one-eighth cent per
dollar on the cost of the repair
work.
The only repairs not affected by
the change in tax laws and
resulting increase are those to real
estate eye glasses and hearing
aids motor vehicles and aircraft.
All parts used however for the
repairs will be taxable according
to State Comptroller Bob Bullock.
Bullock says if the watch stops
ticking or the camera shutter
develops a bug then the repairs
are taxable at the place they are
taken to be fixed
But there are areas of question
which also include taxable repair
items
Bullock soys the cost of
repairing personal property •• in-
cluding home repairs •• will be
taxed.
He notes that this is the first
time such a tax affects every
household in the state directly.
Repairs of washing machines
dryers lawn mowers vacuum
cleaners microwave ovens — if
they are freestanding - telephones
and television sets ore all included.
Sales tax is applicable to the ex-
tended warranties consumers
purchase to protect such items ac-
cording to Bullock
Another area affected but
which will not have any major im-
pact in Panola County is pay
parking
But those travelling to
Astroworld or Six Flags over Texas
will hove to cough up another 5
and one-eighth cents per dollar
when they select a paid parking
slot Cities such as Houston and
Dallas will also cost a penny more
since their sales tax charges in-
clude a one cent mass transit
special tax
Admission prices to such places
including most areas of en-
tertainment are also subject to the
increase Bullock reminded
So we can all look forward to
paying sales tax on items
previously not affected.
They include higher taxes on
tobacco products and vending
machine purchases fertilizer and
many gardening items dry
cleaning and wash ond fold ser-
vices newspaper subscriptions,
most repairs movie and other en-
tertainment admission prices
