Almost immediately in fact Carthage began te
roll and before the contest had ended Buffin begar
to respond as Reynolds always knew he would tok
mg the pressure off Henderson somewhot with o1
82 yard rushing effort thot included some greot
runs, not the least of whcih was the eight yard
taunt in the closing moments that produced the
winning poinfs. That could be the most important,
aspect of this whole victory which had to give the
team a tremendous lift as it moved to 3-1 for the
season

When the Carthage Bulldogs repaired to the
dressing room to discuss the revolting
developments of the first half Sleepy Reynolds fac
ed a monumental task.
"I fold the kids that this had been an odd first
half, but that I felt like we had the superior ball
dub," Reynolds related.
If there's an award for Salesman of the Year, the
Bulldog coach gets it hands down.
Trailing 10 0 at intermission, later down 17-0 and
then 23-6, the Bulldogs justified the faith shown by
their tutor as rallied furiously in the final 16:07 of
action to stun Mt. Pleasant 27-23 here Friday
night, scoring the game winning touchdown with
1 07 to spare and almost getting another before the
final whistle.
There were so many big plays for the Bulldogs
that it was hard to recount them all but Reynolds
triad to do just that as accepted the congratulations
of fans after such a superb offensive show.
"It was really a great game for the spectators,
wasn't if. It was a good game to watch. Shoot I
even enjoyed watching it," he said with a smile.
Kemmy (Henderson) made some big ploys,
(Sammy) Buff in had some big runs. Paul (Brewster)
threw some big possses (Otit) Amy made some big
returns and (Jay) Blisseff caught that big pass on
fourth down those were a few we made when we

Superintendent Marvin Crawford was right on
when he termed it a ''character builder "
it was all that and more in fact it was pretty
close a miracle
Reynolds convinced the Bulldogs during intermis-
sion that all they needed to do was turn the burners
up a little on the offense Of course they hadrt
been doing bad in the f irst half but two big fumbles
owe at the Tigers 14 and the other at the Car
thage 24 and a personal foul nullified one chance
to score and gifted Mt. Pleasant with two scores for
a 10-0 halffime lead
We were really moving the ball on them pretty
well but they had us on the ropes and She momen

touchdown on the ground and another to cap a uni-
que pass play
Together Buffin and Henderson accounted for 193
of Carthage s 201 rushing total Brewster hit seven
of 14 passes for 85 yards and the Bulldogs outgain-
ed the Tigers by a healthy 286 191 margin. They
also had them in return yardage too, which was
awfully important the way the game turned
around Carthage had 214 in this category (punt
returns and kickoff returns) and Mt Pleasant
amassed just 135
As Reynolds Said even early in the game the
statistics belonged to the Bulldogs Amy returned
the game s opening kickoff 28 and when Carthage
punted Henderson s kick rolled dead at the Tiger's
eight putting them in an immediate hole.
Two penalties kept Mt Pleasant pinned down
and when it had to punt, Carthage got great field
When Tiger speedster Michael Miller returned
the second half kickoff 75 yards to the Carthage 10
and the Tigers blew on in for a 17-0 lead few would
have cast their fortunes on the Bulldogs
Thai splashing sound in the background was the
noise some folks were making as they started
changing horses in mid stream
But Corthoge started its comeback immediately
and never gave up even when Mf Pleasant
answered the first Bulldog touchdown with another
of its own to regain a 17 point edge with 4:07 left in
the third sfanza.
We found some offense then Reynolds recall

position despite a 48-ydrd boot.
Buffm ran three times for 4C yards and Carthage
had a first down a’ the Tiger 14 when Henderson

fumbled and Terry Fain claimed the ball to kill the
threat
When Virgil Hardy and Jon Almeida hurled Tiger
quarterback Levoil Crump for a three yard loss on
third and five Carthage was in great shape for
another assault on the goal until on unnecessary
15 yard personal foul gave the Tigers new life
They promptly drove the 70 yards needed to take
a 7 0 lead Crum finally scoring on the 17th play of
the series fcrom the four John Grooters his the
PAT with 10 34 left in the had
On the kickoff Carthage was assessed a clipping
penalty and on the next play after an 11 yard gain
Alton Mitchell taking control for the Tigers.
Mark Peloquin, Hardy Steven Allison Roy Bell
and Lonnie Simonson combined defensive talenfs
to finally stop the Tigers at the 14 but Grooters
kicked a 30 yard field goal and made it 10-0.
Certfege roared back 32 yards on the kickoff and
added 21 rushing before finally running out of
steam at the Tiger 28. Maybe that was when
Reynolds decided he had .the superior club but
things sure were looking bleak
Then Miller took the third quarter kickoff eluded
Kenneth Tatum easily o’ about the 20 and took off
on a 75-yard kickoff return Amy hauled him down
frombehind at ’he 10 but later Alvester Bobby slip-
ped over from ’he two and the Tigers had a 17-0
edge
Cor'hage started working miracles in the next
few seconds Henderson brought the kickoff back
.20 to his 30 and shortly the Bulldogs were hit with a
five yard penalty that was offset by o personal foul
by the Tigers on a dead ball foul It was net 10 for
Corthoge and away the Bulldogs went Brewster
hitting Amy for 20 yards and Henderson running 24
on the next play
From the 16 Brewster passed in the left flat to
Withams and as the Tigers quickly converged on .
him he turned and dealt a loterol to Henderson at
obout the 12 and the Bulldog back doriced into the
end zone unattended
When the PAT was blocked some of the en
thosiosm died ' and when Miller returned the
kickoff 36 and the T igers went 53 to score in just six
plays for a 23-6 edge Carthage could have folded
but didn t.
Mike Castleberry made his first kickoff return
memorabie as he roced 36 yards to gef Carthage on
the rood to victory A'the end of the play the Tigers
were hit with a personal foul and Corthage se’ up

Hendersom broke several tackles on a 16 yard
fount ond later scored from the four as Carthoge
narrowed the gap to 23-14 with o run for extra
points by Brewster There was 1 23 left in the third
quarter
Hardy sfopped Mt Pleas ant single handed with
two solo tackles for one yard in gam in the next
series and an incomplete pass forced a punt
Amy fielded the boll of his 33 eludmg a Tiger
defender immediately-to goin breathing room As
he found daylight, he hod just one man to beat and
he hurdled Bobby to break info ’he open and was
off on a 67yord jount.
Now the Bulldog faithful were going bananas
The jam’ wos tumping. With 11 minufes to play.
Corthoge cut ’he gop to 23 21 on Jeff Etheredges
RAT
There was stiff rhe matter of confomning the
Tigers but Allison Roy Bell and Kenneth Tatum
came through with some very big tack las to force a
punt
