"They didn't have that much speed, but we dopn't

who took off for the goal. The boll couldn't be ad-
vanced so Carthago took it at its own 48, but time
was now on th* Bulldogs side and victory seemed
virtually assured.
Five or six seconds later the Bulldogs put a death
lock on the win when Jones got loose and scored on
his S2yard jount.
"We needed to play a dose one like that against
a good team,” Youngblood said. Wo ve won the
other games too easily. I'm glad we got to ploy a
tough team. It happened at the right time."

cranked up the attack on runs of nine and 14 yards
by Pipkin, passes of eight and nine yards from Jerry
Castleberry to Apple and Tyrone Burroughs and
finally a two-yard dash to the end zona by Pipkin
with 38 seconds left before intermission. Posquier
made it 7-0 with the PAT.
The Tigers drove 72 yards on 16 ploys after the
third quarter kickoff to knot the game. Lewis gain-
ed 45 yards on six tries, including the touchdown of
21. Eddie Morton added the extra point with 4:26
left in the period.
Carthage failed to come up with a first down and
Bogenshutz drilled a 47-yard kick dead on the Tiger
11. The Bulldog defense held then and as the end of
the period rolled around, the hosts had to punt
from deep in their own territory.
Fonta Castleberry returned the ball five to the
Mt. Pleasant 39 and Carthage went to score in
three plays. Jerry Castleberry used his great moves
to freeze the outside containment just enough that
when he finally went outside and turned the cor-
ner, he could outrun everybody 33 to the end zone.
When Pasquior kicked the ball wide on the extra
point attempt. It was still anyone’s gome, however,
and shortly that point was made absolutely door
when Mt. Pleasant drove from its 38 to the Car-
thage 17 before running out of downs.
When the Bulldogs were forced to punt, things
still looked good for the Tigers as the ball was
shanked and obviously was going to fall short. With
the Tiger sidelines yelling for players to get out of
the way of the ball, Sanders came on the dead run
and tried to field it in the air. It went right through

for the catches made by Allen Apple and Fonta
Costleberry's punt returns.
Carthage had plenty of offense, but Mt. Pleatant
was big and aggressive and it kept the Bulldogs
bottled up pretty much until the fourth quarter
whan five plays produced 89 yards and the two
scores that broke the game open,
Jonet wound up with 87 yards rushing,
Castleberry had 78 and Pipkin 58. The Carthage
speed and quickness was just too much over the
course of the game. It didn’t control the ball, but it
did the damage when necessary.
Carthage never trailed in the contest, but early
on was in trouble as Mt. Pleasant drove from its 27
to the Carthage 24 before quarterback Chris Elliott
fumbled and Letter recovered to kill the threat.
On the first play of the second quarter Fonta
Castleberry returned a punt 15 to the Tigers' 25, but
the Bulldogs missed a chance to score when Brian
Pasquier s 27 yard field goal attempt had neither
the distance or accuracy.
Finally mid way in the second period Castleberry
returned another punt 12 and after a clipping
penalty moved the ball back to the Carthage 20, the
Bulldogs went to score to take a 7-0 lead.
The drive appeared stalled early by another ma-
jor penalty, but Mt Pleasant was hit with a flagrant
facemask violation on the next ploy and Carthage

It travelled just 12 yards and gave the
the ball near mid-field.
Williams cracked the middle for two to
Tiger 49, then Hockadays number was dialed
and he responded with a 51 yard jaunt that blew
the game open. Shultz made it 14-0 with 1:50 re-
maining in the quarter.
Carthage responded to the challenge with a good
drive after Bryanbt returned the ensuing kickoff 22
yards to his 42.
A pass from Reed to Bryant for 10, a 12-yard run
by Hardy and a seven yard pass from reed to
Allison moved the ball quickly to the Tiger 26. On
first down, Bryant fumbled and Mt. Pleasant
recovered at its 19.
Hockaday ran for 11, Robert Taylor carried twice
for one, then Williams gained 25, six, two, six and
three on successive carries. When the drive stalled
at the Carthage 17 and the Tigers faced a third-and-
seven situation. Hockaday threw the only Mt. Plea
sant pass of the game, a strike to Robert Craddock
for a 17-yard touchdown. Shultz kicked the extra
point, making it 21-0 with 2:10 to play before half
. Carthage had three offensive series in the se-
cond half. A penalty killed any production in the
first, they ran out of plays at the Mt. Pleasant 40
