at the outset under selling pressure
from cash Interests and in sympathy
with wheat. The weather and crop
news was favorable.
Patten wires: “Cables lower but do
not bring any buying orders for cash
wheat with us. Their quotations are
still below the market Our purchases
of wheat to arrive yesterday was the
largest of the year, largely from Kan-
sas. This proves conclusively, we
think, that our market is the highest
for this wheat should go via the gulf
for export, if we are on an export
basis, we believe wheat will sell lower.
Receipts of corn light demand very
poor. The price is high and we believe
as the farmers finish their harvest and
our receipts of corn increase that we
will have a lower market Oats rela-
tive to corn are cheap.”
Frazier of Minneapolis wires: ”Here
is a statement I am not a bit afraid to
make regarding the growing crop of
wheat in the Northwest and It is one
of the poorest rooted crops in years
and consequently in poor shape .to stand
any grief. While ft is a splendid look-
ing crop generally to the view from
a car window, one should not forget
the foregoing. Several good men who
have been in the fields of late, tell
me the roots are much too near the
surface.”

Wheat Advanced Sharply on Adverse
Advices and Thea Declined.
Chicago. July 18.—Wheat jumped
, —IMe a bushel early on reports of black
rust in the Northwest. The Minne-
apolis market advanced faster than did
Chicago and later on declined more
rapidly than this market. The reports
were accompanied by buying orders
from the Northwest. The Southwest
•old quite freely. These reports from
the spring wheat belt came chiefly
from two points in South Dakota and
are apparently vouced for by some of
the good men at Minneapolis, but at
the same time, there were a great
many contraictory advices.. It will
take a few days to determine whether
serious consideration should be given
these reports. We may have a repeti-
tion of last year, when a scare, after
advancing the market a few cents,
collapsed, or two years ago, when great
damage was done the crop. Cables were
from unchanged to Md lower. Better
weather was reported ip Russia, but
considerable damage is said to have
Already been done. Cash prices on the
other side receded before lower Ameri-
can offerings of new wheat. The sea-
board reported twenty-five loads of all
kinds of wheat worked for export
Country acceptances were large. Total
primary movement was 1,125.666 bush-
els. or 569.968 bushels more than last
year at this time. Local receipts were

beneficial effect upon this market. Liv-

New York, July 18-—The appearance
in the market of stocks for sals again
this morning chilled the halting at-
tempts to get prices higher, which
have been following one another for
two days past. The selling was attri-
buted largely to foreign account and
was seemingly based on the new alarm
caused by the disorders in Russia and
the declining hopes of Lg-g*— “

The Chicago Chronicle says: "Too
much wheat coming in from the farms,
too little going out from accumulative
oenters, is the real story of weak-
ness and decline. Nearly everyone ex-
pected higher cables and black rust d-
velopments yesterday and perhaps an
improvement in export demand. While
we had a rather active market it was
a weak one and it is likely to con-
tinue as long as receipts keep so much
larger than demands or shipments for
this simply means a piling up for sup-
plies. There is no question as to the
quality of the new wheat, it !• about
the best ever known and the price
cannot be really termed very high or
very low. But this country has a great
deal more than she has a market for.
The winter wheat producers no doubt
realise that they will soon have to
compete with the new spring crop and
that like the winter crop, it promisee
to be a large one. It is true the for-
eigner is nfbbling at the hook all the
time, but that is about all he does.
He does not take the hook in earnest,
that is a very weak spot in the situa-
tion."

A prominent elevator man of Minne-
apolis wires: “Van Dusen has a sam-
ple of wheat from Miller. S. D., which
shows the true black rust, but it is
nothing to be alarmed at. It was ex-
pected we would have a little of it
show in some sections. I understand
some has shown up also at Watertown,
S. D. Wheat, however, is so far ad-
vanced that rust has got to get in ite
work very fast to spoil much wheat.”
Fergus Falls, Minn., wires to Cum-
ming*. Have found no black rust yet
but something is wrong in the wheat
on Pelican Rapids line. Where the soil
is light wheat seems to be dying out.
Will make further investigation and
advise.
Lewis of Minneapolis wires: More
telegrams are coming from Watertown
confirming early rust reporta The
fact that wheat here in Hennepin is
affected is more bullish than ths South
Dakota reports.
A letter from Miller in South Dakota
where Van Dusen Harrington repot ts
discovery of rust claims that straw is
clean without even red rust showing.
Marfield is wiring reports of the dis-
covery of black rust and Lewis Wood-
worth and the greater part of the in-
fluential traders at Minneapolis have
been buying wheat there this morning
quite liberally. This would indicate the
belief that black rust had become an
established fact in some localities at
least. Friedman and a lot of smaller
traders among local professionals have
been buying wheat indutriously recent-
ly here. Some little commission house
buying that looks like it was for
northwest accounts
